Marlee Matlin, 58, joyfully announces her upcoming role as grandmother in heartwarming video: ‘We’ve been promoted to GRANDPARENTS!’

Marlee Matlin happily announced that she is going to be a grandmother in a sweet video that she shared to her main Instagram page on Wednesday.

The Oscar winner, 58 – who is known for starring in projects such as CODA and Switched At Birth – could be seen sitting a table outside as her eldest daughter Sarah, 27, casually strolled by. 

The mother-of-four gently grabbed Sarah’s arm to stop her from walking and guided her so that she was standing next to the actress. 

Upon doing so, Sarah faced forward towards the camera, proudly revealing her growing baby bump while donning a black, cropped sweater and low-waisted pants. 

Matlin held a big smile on her face as she placed her hand on her daughter’s stomach while Sarah reached out towards a piece of cake on a plate in front of her mother.

She turned the sugary dessert around to show that the cake was pink inside, prompting Marlee to yellow out, ‘It’s a girl,’ while also revealing the happy news via sign language. 

The mother daughter duo shared an excited embrace to conclude the adorable announcement. 

In the caption, the actress typed out, ‘We’ve been promoted to GRANDPARENTS! #kevinandmarleegrandparents @sarahgrandalski @frankturn2.’ 

Matlin shares Sarah, Brandon, 23, Tyler, 21, and also Isabelle, 19, with husband and police officer Kevin Grandalski – whom she tied the knot with in 1993. 

Social media users and celebrities jumped to the comment section to express their excitement over the thrilling news. 

Marlee’s CODA co-star, Emilia Jones, typed out, ‘THE BEST NEWS!!!!’ while Priyanka Chopra added, ‘Congratulations,’ followed by a cheering hands and heart-eyed emojis. 

Lance Bass from NSYNC also joined in and added more cheering hands emojis. One fan also wrote, ‘Congratulations!!! You will be a wonderful grandmother!’ 

Matlin has had a successful career in the entertainment industry thus far, and won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Children Of A Lesser God (1986) – making her the first deaf performer to win an Oscar.

The star has also received both Golden Globe and Emmy nominations, and has starred in shows such as Switched At Birth and Reasonable Doubts. 

Recently, Matlin had the chance to step behind the camera and direct an episode of the FOX anthology series titled, Accused. 

She directed the second episode of the first season called Ava’s Story which aired earlier this year in January. 

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June, Marlee opened about her experience with her directorial debut. 

‘It was a very exciting process because, as an actor, I would just go to my trailer, drop off my stuff, go to hair and makeup, study my lines and wait for my call time,’ she explained. 

The actress added, ‘But, as a director, I had my fingers in every single [part of filming]. It was like being the master painter in charge of all the various colors that go into a painting.’ 

In regards to if she would want to direct other projects in the future, the star revealed, ‘Listen, I’d love to be able to direct some more, and I have some ideas in mind.’

‘Acting and directing at the same time is a different challenge that I haven’t attempted yet, but I’m up for that challenge.’

‘And I look forward to more Deaf directors having the opportunity to direct as I did,’ she continued.

And during a joint interview with Teyana Taylor for The New York Times Style Magazine in April, Marlee opened up about gaining confidence over the years. 

‘As I get older, I’m even more confident as an actress and as a person. Even though I’m Deaf, I make noise.’
