Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi Star in Intense Wuthering Heights Trailer

Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi were seen as star-crossed lovers Catherine and Heathcliff in an intense new trailer for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights.

The latest teaser, set to Charli xcx’s song Chains Of Love, comes from the acclaimed filmmaker’s bold and original imagining of Emily Brontë’s classic novel.

The film, which is set for release on Valentine’s Day, follows the love story from romantic to intoxicating, in love and madness.

Set on the misty West Yorkshire moors, the trailer opens with Margot’s Catherine asking Jacob’s Heathcliff what he would do if he were rich.

‘I suppose I would do what all rich men do, live in a big house and be cruel to my servants. Take a wife,’ he replied.

‘Take a wife?’ she echoes before their story plays out on screen.

The trailer plays out to see Catherine marry Edgar Linton, played by Shazad Latif, before Heathcliff flees.

However, the closing scene sees his return, as he whispers to Cathy: ‘So kiss me, and let us both be damned.’

The £62 million production, which was filmed in January, also features Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes and Ewan Mitchell, with original songs by Charli xcx.

Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, published in 1850, is considered a masterpiece of English literature.

The original story centres around the Earnshaws, the Lintons, and their turbulent relationship with Heathcliff, a foster son of the Earnshaws.

Heathcliff is one of the most infamous and complex romantic heroes in Western literature, known for his brooding nature and obsession with Cathy.

There have been a number of film adaptions of the book over the years, with perhaps the most well known being the 1939 version directed by William Wyler, and starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier.

The most recent adaption is the 2011 film by Andrea Arnold, starring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson.

Those expecting a faithful adaptation of the beloved work may be in for a rude awakening as Emerald’s upcoming film is said to lean into the ‘stylised depravity’ she has become known for after directing the 2023 hit Saltburn.

According to World of Reel, Emerald’s Wuthering Heights received a mixed reaction at its first test screening in Dallas, Texas this month.

The film is said to feature ‘intimate, clinical and purposefully discomforting’ masturbation scenes and a BDSM-inspired sex scene involving horse reins.

The camera is also said to linger on ‘suggestive’ imagery including ‘egg yolks running through fingers’ and ‘dough being kneaded with quiet aggression’.

The publication does note that Margot and Jacob both deliver ‘committed performances’ and have ‘great chemistry’.

Born in 1818 in West Yorkshire, author Emily Brontë was the fifth of six children, and spent most of her short life in the moorland village of Haworth, where her Irish father Patrick was curate.

But life dealt Emily a series of terrible blows as she lost her mother when she was three, then two older sisters when she was seven.

Following her trauma, the novelist retreated into a fantasy world, writing stories and poetry with her siblings.

The writer poured her suffering and passion into Wuthering Heights, a wrenching love story as raw as the Yorkshire Moors on which it’s set.
