Margaret Qualley has hilariously recalled her first meeting with her new co-star Dennis Quaid when he was dating her mother Andie MacDowell in the early 2000s.
The actress, 29, is the daughter of the famous Four Weddings And A Funeral star and former model Paul Qualley, who divorced when she was four years old.
In a new interview, Margaret explained how she developed an obsession with the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap and urged Andie, 66, to watch it with her in the hopes that her parents would reconcile like those in the film.
However, she was shocked to find out that her mother had instead struck up a romance with her Dinner with Friends co-star Dennis, 70, who famously also played dad Nick Parker in The Parent Trap.
Recalling her first meeting with the actor when she was around six years old, Margaret told The Sunday Times that she had been ‘thrown’ by the realisation her plan had gone awry and insulted Dennis’ outfit.

She recalled how Andie had arrived home after months away filming, saying: ‘She’s like, “You know you love The Parent Trap so much?” And I was like, yeah, yeah. And then in walks Dennis Quaid.
‘I thought I was magic and that I’d willed the wrong thing into existence!’
The Maid star continued: ‘He walks in wearing red leather pants and I was just so thrown. I said, “Your pants are stupid,” and then I never talked to him ever again.’
Offering an explanation for Dennis’ peculiar outfit choice, she added: ‘It was the 2000s and he was, I don’t know, going through something.’
Margaret previously spoke about her real-life Parent Trap connection while on The Late Late Show back in 2019.
She explained: ‘Being a child of divorce, I just really glued onto The Parent Trap. I like both versions, but I was particularly drawn to the Lindsay Lohan, Dennis Quaid version.
‘I would kind of continuously be like, “Hey, guys, I don’t know if you’ve seen The Parent Trap, but things turned out pretty great for them, right? I know you guys got divorced, but have you seen The Parent Trap? They all are really happy at the end! What do you guys think?”‘
But she joked that her mother had ‘really misunderstood’ her intention, when she began dating Dennis.

Margaret is now starring opposite Dennis in their new critically acclaimed film The Substance, alongside Demi Moore (Dennis, Coralie Fargeat, Margaret and Demi pictured at premiere in May)
She said: ‘I was sure that it was all my fault and I had wished this into fruition. I took complete responsibility’.
Margaret is now starring opposite Dennis in their new critically acclaimed film The Substance, alongside Demi Moore.
The body horror movie follows ageing celebrity fitness instructor Elisabeth Sparkle – played by Demi, 61 – after she takes an experimental substance intended to transform her into a younger and improved version of herself.
Margaret stars as Elisabeth’s younger form, who goes by Sue, while Dennis plays Harvey – a sexist TV boss.
Elsewhere in the interview, Margaret explained how she used a combination of intense physical training, alcohol and marijuana to help her navigate the most challenging scene of her career for the film.
She revealed one pivotal scene involving a highly sexualised dance class led by a lycra-clad Sue, resulted in her ‘crying in the bathroom’ before she’d even shot her first take.
The Poor Things star said: ‘That specific kind of sexuality doesn’t lend itself to me,’ and explained she choreographed her routines in private.
She admitted that when the cameras finally rolled, she needed a mixture of tequila and weed to push herself through it.

‘I just got wasted first thing in the morning because I was like, I can’t do this in front of everybody,’ she said.
Margaret also confessed she was initially at loggerheads with director Coralie Fargeat, who also wrote the film’s screenplay, over her character’s physical presentation.
Personal trainers were drafted in to help the actress attain Sue’s athletic physique, but Coralie – whose ‘vision of Sue was Eighties inspired, with butt and boobs, think Jessica Rabbit’ – was unhappy with the results.
‘So I had to be like, OK, well, I did what you said and you’re not happy, so I guess I’ll take matters into my own hands,’ Margaret explained.
Of Sue’s well-endowed appearance, she added: ‘Unfortunately there is no magic boob potion, so we had to glue those on.
‘Coralie found an incredible prosthetic team to endow me with the rack of a lifetime, just not my lifetime.’
The Substance has been met by rave reviews, received a 13-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival.
The role required Demi to be completely naked in a scene where Margaret’s character is ‘birthed’ – which shows the older actress examining her own nude body before Margaret emerges and looks at her own skin in a full-frontal scene.

Speaking at Cannes Film Festival in May, Demi said the full-frontal nudity scenes in The Substance were easier to perform with Margaret because she made her feel ‘very safe’.
‘I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with,’ she said. ‘We obviously were quite close — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were.
‘But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.’
The Substance is released across the United Kingdom and the United States on September 20.
