Mandy Moore Reveals Heartbreak After Losing Home in LA Fires

Mandy Moore took to Instagram on Sunday to pay tribute to her mother-in-law Kathy Goldsmith for ‘having risen to the occasion’ in the six months since she lost her home in the Los Angeles wildfires.

‘It’s been a hell of a year,’ the Emmy-nominated actress, 41, began her social media post, which was to commemorate Kathy’s birthday.

Moore and Kathy’s son, musician Taylor Goldsmith, have been wed for more than six years and are parents to three children – son August ‘Gus’ Harrison, four, son Oscar ‘Ozzie’ Bennett, three, and daughter Louise Everett, 10 months.

Moore said she was ‘not sure what [she] would have done without her in the hours, days, weeks, and months since the fire.

The New Hampshire-born star noted that her mother-in-law ‘has been by our side since the very beginning, without skipping a beat’ in spite of suffering ‘her own immense loss’ during the tumultuous timeframe.

Moore, who played the role of Rebecca Pearson on the NBC series This Is Us, said she was ‘heartbroken’ that the five-minute walk that separated their homes was ‘no longer on the table.’

Moore said that despite the hardships 2025’s first half has presented, she remains ‘so grateful’ that her mother-in-law has ‘been able to live under the same roof’ with her family ‘these last 6 months.’

The Dr. Death actress – who caught flak for promoting a relative’s GoFundMe page amid the turbulent time – reflected on the ‘silver lining’ of having Kathy on hand in the wake of the damaging fires.

‘She’s definitely ours,’ Moore said. ‘From coffee in the morning as we let the dogs out, to tea after the kids go down and talking about our grief, funny things that happened in our day, etc….’

Moore spoke about the valuable help Kathy has provided as a grandma, as she looks to keep her children’s habits and schedules consistent amid the time of transition from one home to another.

‘To her absolutely mastering bath time, mealtime, playtime and everything in between- including moments like when Gus declared today- “I have to GO POOP with Gaga now!”, we couldn’t be luckier that she’s ours and we’re never letting her go,’ Moore said.

Moore joked of the temporary living arrangement: ‘Seriously, she thinks she can move into her new place but that’s not happening.’

Moore has kept her 5.5 million followers on the social media platform in the loop of her life, both during the blaze itself and amid the ongoing rebuilding process.

In May, the actress was publicly critical of Los Angeles County officials for what she characterized as an ineffective, overly-bureaucratic process for homeowners looking to rebuild in the wake of the deadly fires.

‘Thanks LA County for making it frustrating and impossible to rebuild after the fires as possible,’ she said on Instagram Stories.

She added that she ‘shouldn’t be surprised but it’s mind boggling the red tape and hoops they’re putting us all through.’
