The 2024 film is set in The Big Apple, which ‘comes under attack from an alien invasion,’ leaving ‘a woman and other survivors try to find a way to safety.’

‘They soon learn that they must remain absolutely silent as the mysterious creatures are drawn to the slightest sound,’ per Paramount Pictures.

Meanwhile, Lupita – who plays Samira, an NYC woman trying to survive the invasion alongside her cat Frodo – recently shared that she underwent cat therapy in preparation.

‘When I read the script, I loved the character, and I loved the story that Michael [Sarnoski] was telling with this film,’ The Black Panther actress told Digital Spy in an interview published Monday. ‘It’s a very surprising tone that he’s added to this universe.’

Lupita added, ‘The cat, that was the sticking point for me.’

She even tried to switch up her character’s pet of choice to no avail.

‘I actually tried to get [Michael] to change the animal,’ Lupita recalled to the outlet. ‘He was like, “No it has to be a cat.” Because I wanted to play the role, I had to get over my fear of cats.’

To conquer her phobia, the Little Monsters actress participated in ‘cat therapy,’ in which she interacted with cats in the comfort of her own home.

‘It started with two, and the first day, they just let the cats roam around me, and I asked the woman who brought the cats questions about why they were doing certain things,’ Lupita revealed. ‘The next day, I touched one with one finger and slowly, slowly, I got comfortable enough to hold a cat through this film.’

And feline friend aside, she called the role of surviving an alien invasion both ‘exhausting’ and ‘rewarding.’

‘I actually remember when we started doing this film and once the invasion had happened and we had to act scared, I was like, “Oh, my God,”‘ Lupita shared. ‘I had amnesia about how much energy it takes to act scared all day. … I didn’t learn my lesson, and that’s why I came back [to the horror genre.]’

Meanwhile, Lupita overcame her fear of cats as she was joined by Nico and Schnitzel, the cats who play Frodo in the movie, throughout the press tour.

The Serengeti alum even became a cat mom in real life.

‘Introducing my new companion, Yoyo!’ Lupita wrote in October alongside herself and her fur baby. ‘I have historically been afraid of cats, but when my life was altered instantly recently, a little voice whispered to me that it was time to embrace change and new possibilities.’

Recalling the story of how the two came to be, she added, ‘So, a dear friend (shoutout Palmer Hefferan!) held my hand through the process and took me to visit my first animal shelters. I fostered Yoyo from Best Friends Adoption Center, and 3 days into it, I knew I could not give him up.’

Giving insight into some fun facts about Yoyo, Lupita wrote that he loves company and food, ‘is very picky about his wand toys,’ and ‘only drinks running water.’

She also shared that ‘the bugs in the house don’t stand a chance,’ and that ‘he can’t be trusted around supplements!’

Lupita sweetly concluded her post, ‘I never understood people whose phones were full of photos and videos of their pets – now I am one of those people! It may look like I saved Yoyo, but really, Yoyo is saving me.’
