Lucy Watson has revealed she was faced with a ‘life-or-death decision’ after her baby son became tangled in his own umbilical cord during the final months of her pregnancy.

The former Made In Chelsea cast-member welcomed son Willoughby – her first child with husband James Dunmore – in March, but later described the birthing process as ‘long, with complications.’

Watson, 33, has since shared her birth story in a lengthy social medial post, admitting she opted for private consultant-led care over the National Health Service as she went through the various stages of pregnancy.

‘I didn’t have a birth plan at all, I was just trusting in my consultant – I thought she was amazing,’ the TV personality told TikTok followers on Monday.

‘I always said to her from the beginning, whatever is safest, I don’t care what I do. I don’t care if I do pain relief, I don’t care if I do caesarean or vaginal birth, whatever is safest for me and the baby is what I’m happy to do.’

She added: ‘I did say the one thing I really didn’t want was an emergency C-section. I didn’t want to ever be in the position where I was in an emergency scenario. That was my one thing that I really didn’t want.’

But Watson’s worst-case scenario became a reality after a routine 39-week scan revealed the baby’s umbilical cord had wrapped itself around his head.

The TV personality was advised to check into hospital the following day and was given two choices – be induced or submit to a C-section.

A second scan the following morning confirmed the cord was no longer wrapped around the child’s head, meaning his passage through the vaginal canal would be less risky.

Encouraged by the news, Watson – who had already been contracting for more than a week – opted for a conventional birth.

She recalled: ‘They broke my waters, not fun… I was gushing fluid for four hours, and not just a little bit, I was gushing bucket-loads of fluid. I don’t even know where it was coming from but every time I moved there would be a gush.’

After contracting for six hours without pain relief Watson opted for an epidural after being told she was still only five centimeters dilated.

Fifteen hours into labour the child’s head had emerged from her cervix, but was swollen and Willoughby was unable to force his way through.

‘It got to the point where his heart rate was really high,’ said Watson. ‘I was exhausted, the alarms were going off in the hospital, in our room, you could tell everyone was really worried.

‘The alarm was going off for a while and they came in and said we need to get him out, he’s not in a good way, he’s in distress. It’s a life or death situation and we need to get him out now, we need to do an emergency caesarean.

Watson admitted it initially crossed her mind that she might lose her son, and credited husband James for being her rock throughout the ordeal.

‘James was incredible,’ she said. ‘He didn’t leave my side at any point. He was with me and talking to me and comforting me the whole time.’

The influencer announced in September 2023 she was pregnant with their first child and called the baby a ‘little miracle’ after a three-year battle to conceive.

Shortly after giving birth she shared snaps of herself and Willoughby as she lay in her hospital bed.

Watson’s journey to pregnancy was an emotional one – as the couple struggled with fertility issues.

In a YouTube video discussing their fertility journey in November, Watson opened up about how hard it was to stay strong throughout her journey as she described that period of her life as a ‘never-ending pit of negativity’.

Revealing how she used meditation as a coping mechanism while she was trying to conceive, she said: ‘Another kind of coping mechanism for trying to conceive is meditation.

‘I know it sounds ridiculous but sometimes you can feel so down and so like you’re in a never-ending pit of negativity, you just don’t know how to feel happy.

‘It’s hard because James and I have gone through this. We had this period of time in our life where it was thing after thing after thing, not only fertility related, and it could be hard at times for us to feel good and happy.’

She also admitted that she is aware that there are no guarantees in pregnancy and her journey could end at any point.

Overcome with emotion, Watson took a deep breath as she continued: ‘I am basically so grateful for where I am today.

‘I’m pregnant with my son. Obviously I know this journey could end tomorrow, or the next day like I don’t know how long this is going to last or if it if we’ll make it to the end or get to the point of having a baby in arms.

‘But I’m just joying enjoying every moment and just living for every day because we’ve fought to get here and we are so grateful to be here.

‘I’m just choosing to love every moment really and it’s surreal, still to this day it is surreal but it is the most amazing feeling and I really hope that anyone out there who is struggling gets to experience it too and I hope that this video has helped.’

The reality star-come-author announced her engagement to her partner James in September 2020, after meeting on the E4 set of Made In Chelsea in 2015. She left the show a year later.
