In an interview, Lisa sobbed as she told how she’s had to watch the cancer ‘tear my mum’s body apart’, amid Shirley’s declining health.
Speaking to The Sun, the singer urged people to get their smear test after abnormal cells were found in her cervix in March, resulting in her having a colposcopy procedure.
She sobbed as she also told how Shirley had missed her own smear tests for ‘five years’ after being too ‘proud’ and ’embarrassed’ to go to the doctors.
Opening up about her mum’s ordeal, Lisa said: ‘She’s quite a proud and self-conscious person and gets embarrassed. Going to the doctors and getting a smear she thought it was quite invasive and she put it off.
‘Cancer can grow so quickly, by the time she started to get an ache in her leg and the constant bleeding that alerted her to go to the doctors – it was two years too late.’
Lisa told how the cancer had spread to Shirley’s ‘lymph node glands’ and ‘collar bone’, with her fight with cancer seeing her face so much chemotherapy and radiotherapy, that she lost a kidney as a result.
