Lewis Capaldi Jokes He Was ‘B*tched by Brundle’ After Awkward Handshake Mix-Up

Lewis Capaldi joked he was ‘b*tched by Brundle’ after the F1 legend swerved his handshake and mistook his brother for him during the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Someone I Loved hitmaker, 28, took to X on Sunday to re-share the hilarious moment where the Sky Sports presenter Martin Brundle, 66, attempted to chat to him during the grid walk.

Brundle, who has become famed for his pre-race grid walks, had finished interviewing Superman actor David Corensweat and turned his attentions to Lewis.

In the clip, Brundle appeared to recognise Lewis and began speaking to him, ‘Lewis, wonderful to see you’.

‘I’m his brother,’ said the man, who was wearing a cap, in response to Brundle.

Brundle replied, ‘I’m sorry, you’re his brother’ and laughed in recognition of his error, as the real Lewis Capaldi appeared in the background and came to the rescue.

‘I’m sorry, he’s got a cap on,’ Brundle continued through laughter, before asking ‘How are you, how are you both’ to Lewis.

The hilarious exchange came ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, which saw George Russell win from pole and McLaren secure the Constructors Championship.

 ‘Very nice to meet you, a big fan,’ the Grammy Award winner said to Brundle, before the brothers were asked who they were supporting.

‘He’s here supporting McLaren,’ he responded while pointing to his brother, acknowledging he is the bigger F1 fan out of the two of them.

It prompted Brundle to ask ‘So he’s the musician and you are the driver’ to his brother, who responded ‘I’m just a guy who’s here, that’s all’, prompting more laughter.

Brundle rounded off the interview by saying ‘Well, I’m sorry that I mistaked you, but it’s lovely to see you on the grid.’

Just when the chaotic interview drew to a close, Lewis thanked him and attempted to shake the presenter’s hand.

However Brundle, who was unaware, turned away to continue the grid walk to leave Lewis with his hand outstretched.

Reacting to the accidental snub, the Hold You While You Wait singer joked, ‘I’ll hold that’ and preceded to shake his own hand before bursting into laughter as he walked away with his brother.

Alongside the video, Lewis penned: ‘b*tched by Brundle’.

Several fans took to X to joke that the singer ‘accepted the rejection like a true champion’ while Sky Sports tagged Martin Brundle and added, ‘Apology incoming’.

 They wrote: ‘Character building moment; The face of rejection is wild; Accepted the rejection like a true champion; Brundle missed his chance to give THE Lewis Capaldi a handshake, his loss;

‘This made me laugh way more than it should have! Fab to see you and your brother on the grid; This whole interaction was hilarious;

‘I’ve never seen Brundle fluff so much; He left you hanging bless; Haha, Brundle walked right past you, Lewis! That handshake miss is gold.’

Ahead of the night race, Lewis took to the stage to perform a number of his hits for F1 fans.

It comes after the singer might have sold out London’s O2 arena last month, but his celebrity status and £7.5million fortune didn’t stop him from riding the tube ahead of his gig.

The star has boosted his fortune drastically over the years despite taking a career hiatus in 2023 amid his battle with Tourette’s Syndrome.

His accounts firm Face Like Thunder was valued at £4,311,366 in December 2024, his second business, Face Like Thunder Touring, had £400,000 sitting in the bank as of last year and he also owns a £3million home in London.

But, despite having multi-million-pound assets, Lewis has proved that he is choosing not to live a million-pound lifestyle as he was spotted at North Greenwich station ahead of his show.

Posing for an Instagram selfie alongside AllOnTheBoard’s Ian Redpath and Jeremy Chopra, Lewis looked happy as he smiled and put a thumbs up alongside the two authors.

They posed in front of the service information board, which displayed a heartfelt poem to celebrate Lewis’s appearance as the two fans confessed it was ‘wonderful’ to meet him.

Despite taking time off from touring, Lewis has continued to rake in the cash thanks to his songwriting business.

As well as profiting from his royalties, Lewis, who set up his touring firm in 2017, is the sole director of all his companies and owns all the shares in them.

Amongst his earnings, Lewis lives in a £3million London pad in Hampstead alongside A-lister neighbour Harry Styles.
