Legendary Rock Frontman Heads to Rottnest Island Before Perth Show—Guess Who?

He is the frontman of one of the most iconic bands in the world.

The rocker’s band has been wowing audiences for more than four decades, having sold a formidable 150 million albums worldwide.

As frontman for this legendary quartet, he is responsible for being one of the creators of thrash metal.

His band also had the rare honour of being the first to perform on all seven continents, completing the feat in 2013 with a show in Antarctica.

At 62, he’s as full of hard rock energy as ever – a fact Australian fans will discover when his band kicks off its Australian tour this week.

But do you know who it is? It’s none other than Metallica frontman James Hetfield.

The heavy metal icon was all smiles this week as he was spotted taking in some downtime before Metallica’s anticipated Australian tour kicks off in Perth.

One excited fan took to the Metallica M72 World Tour Facebook page on Thursday to share a photo of the Enter Sandman rocker.

He was spotted boarding a ferry to Rottnest Island, possibly eager to get up close and personal with the island’s most famous inhabitants – the cute-as-a-button quokkas.

James looked over the moon to be enjoying some pre-show relaxation, beaming as he prepared to take the ferry ride.

He was wearing a black hooded jumper featuring the band Black Sabbath. It was a memento from the recent Back To The Beginning concert in Birmingham that saw Metallica pay tribute to the legendary British metallers.

He also wore a black and white trucker cap as well as a pair of dark aviator-style sunglasses to keep the incognito theme going.

The post was met with a flurry of comments from die-hard Metallica fans eager to get up close and personal with the metal icon.

‘Hilarious. Frontman of one of the greatest and most successful bands in history just casually catching a ferry in WA,’ one wrote. ‘Papa Het how good.’

‘The Legend himself has arrived on our shores. I’m excited,’ a second gushed.

A third was quite taken with James’ decidedly un-rock-star-like mode of transport.

‘No helicopters or big private boats for these boys… on the ferry. Love it.’

Metallica are in Perth to perform at the Optus Stadium on November 1.

From there, they will head to Adelaide for a November 5 show at Adelaide Oval, and then Melbourne for a concert at Marvel Stadium on November 8.

The band will wrap the Australian leg of their tour with a show at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on November 12 and one at Accor Stadium in Sydney on November 15.

The metal giants announced their Down Under tour late last year, marking their first return to Aussie shores in more than ten years.

It is the first time Metallica has returned to Australia since the 2013 Soundwave festival, where they headlined along with Linkin Park and Blink-182.

It follows a cancelled Australian stadium tour in 2020, with James having undergone rehab for addiction.

‘As most of you probably know, our brother James has been struggling with addiction on and off for many years,’ a statement at the time read.

‘He has now, unfortunately, had to re-enter a treatment program to work on his recovery again.

‘We fully intend to make our way to your part of the world as soon as health and schedule permit. We’ll let you know as soon as we can.’
