Kristin Cavallari once caught an intruder ‘crawling on my bedroom floor’ while quarantining with then-husband Jay Cutler, their three children, and two friends at a gated resort in the Bahamas for three weeks from March-April 2020 as the coronavirus shut down the world.
Earlier that same day, the 37-year-old Let’s Be Honest podcaster had called a maintenance man to fix a broken HVAC unit while she was laying all the jewelry from her Uncommon James brand on a closet counter.
‘I had [my eldest son] Cam in the bed with me. Cam and I were sleeping,’ Kristin recalled on Tuesday’s episode of her podcast.
‘And I woke up to a man crawling on my bedroom floor…to get to the closet to get the Uncommon James jewelry.’
Cavallari’s first instinct was to yell, ‘What the f*** are you doing?!’
‘I said it just like that and this man stands up, runs out the door. And, you guys, he had a ski mask on, full black arms, black pants, like the full thing,’ the Uncommon James founder marveled.

‘And I went, “Oh, f***.” That was not Jay. Like, I don’t know what that was but because Camden was in the bed with me, I didn’t yell. I didn’t scream. You think in those moments that that’s what you’d do, but your instincts just kick in. I honestly felt like I was in Mission Impossible.’
Kristin was already sleeping in a separate bedroom from the 41-year-old Gratis Beer founder, whom she texted to no avail at 1am.
‘F***, I have to go out into the house by myself and leave my son here in bed,’ Cavallari recalled.
‘Jay was upstairs with [our younger children] Jackson and Saylor…I woke up Jay and once I woke Jay up, then I got really nervous. Then I start [to get] like, really scared. I started shaking, and I was able to process then what just happened. But until that point, I was not scared. I was really calm. You just are running off of instinct.’
The intruder – who was the HVAC maintenance man – wound up stealing ‘all of the cash we had in a backpack’ but they ‘ended up getting it back.’
‘My kids still do not know [this] to this day,’ the Truly Simple cookbook author stated.
‘That was one of the scariest things that I went through…I will not tell them, probably, until they’re adults. Because I just think some things kids do not need to know.’
Kristin and Jay returned to Nashville on April 7, 2020 and just 19 days later they officially announced they were legally separating after seven years of marriage, but their divorce wasn’t finalized until 2022.
Cavallari has custody of their kids – son Camden, 12; son Jaxon, 10; and daughter Saylor, 9 – leading up to Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, but Cutler has custody from Christmas afternoon through January 2.
