Kris Jenner: From Flight Attendant to Reality TV Queen and Momager

She’s the matriarch of arguably the most famous family in showbiz and the original momager.

Celebrating the big 70 with a Bond-themed bash over the weekend, Kris Jenner is showing no sign of slowing down as she continues to carve out her legacy.

Mother to six children and a grandmother to 12, the Kardashian Jenner empire is forever expanding and steering it at the reins is mum Kris.

From starting out as a flight attendant on American Airlines, Kris’ first focus was to be a wife and a mother.

However after the breakdown of her marriage to her first husband Robert Kardashian, the star realised she was going to have to pay the bills.

But it was Keeping Up With The Kardashians which really kickstarted the family’s soar to stardom and 20 years later the family are on their 37th series of their reality TV show.

The reality star coined the term ‘momager’ as the key driving figure behind all of her children’s business from SKIMS to Kylie Cosmetics.

Her motto is ‘if somebody says no you’re talking to the wrong person’ and despite celebrating her 70th birthday she is showing no slowing down.

With a hectic schedule both personally and professionally, Kris is also doing it all while looking younger than ever after undergoing a $100k facelift earlier this year.

And as she continues to steal the spotlight from her children on red carpets and events, how did she become the greatest momager and Hollywood superstar?

Kris has confessed she has ‘manifested my entire life without realising what the word meant or that “I’m going to manifest this”. I never specifically said that, but I’ve done that exact thing without realising.’

Speaking to Forbes in 2022 she explained: ‘I also have a very spiritual side and I that’s probably one of the most important things I do every day is I pray about everything.

‘And that’s my way of manifesting because I pray about my family, I pray about my friends and I pray about my everything, health and business and if you lead with love anything can happen.’

Born in San Diego in 1955, Kris grew up alongside her younger sister, Karen, and moved around a lot because of her parents’ divorce.

After graduating from high school, Kris admitted herself that she was far more interested in ‘getting out in the world’ and becoming a wife and mother than pursuing her education.

In 1978, she married Robert Kardashian, famous for his friendship with athlete and actor O.J. Simpson, and role as a high-flying lawyer.

At the time Kris was working as a flight attendant for American Airlines, jetting around the states and learning the discipline of a strict schedule.

Speaking about her job on The Burnouts podcast in April she reflected: ‘Every single lesson that I learned that I really appreciate, I think I learned from that year and a half or two years of being a flight attendant.

‘It taught me about how to deal with things that you know you don’t want to deal with or that you’re disappointed in and how to you know turn it around and lean into it.’

Seeing age as just a number, from a young age the star wasn’t afraid to be in charge of colleagues 10 years older than her.

She explained: ‘I was walking onto a 747 full of people that were professionals and knew exactly what they were doing and I had to be the one in charge and I was 20 telling everybody what to do.’

After welcoming four children Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Rob, Kris and Robert divorced in 1989, however the family gained national fame after he served as OJ Simpson’s defense during his highly publicised trial over the murder of Nicole, who was Kris’ close friend.

In 2003 Kris went on to marry Bruce Jenner, now Caitlyn, who was a hugely famous Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete star.

The couple had Kendall and Kylie together and embarked on a glamorous jet-set life, with Kris acting as Bruce’s manager.

Proving her PR-savvy talents, Kris began negotiating endorsement deals and helping to promote Bruce’s career as a racecar driver.

By 2007, Kris had negotiated a TV show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which documented the day-to-day life of her family.

Speaking about the show in 2022 she reflected: ‘I started doing my show when I was like 51 or 52 years old by the time it got on the air and it’s been one of the most rewarding chapters of my life.

‘I get to get up every single day and work with my family and create something new every time that we get together.

‘It’s joyful at this point it’s a lot of work and you have to know what you’re doing and eventually we figured it out but it’s been a great journey.’

Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s propelled the family to international fame and the family have since done 20 seasons of KUWTK, 10 seasons of spin-offs and seven season’s of The Kardashians.

Launching all her daughters into the spotlight, Kris then coined the term ‘momager’ as she became the backbone behind her daughters’ businesses.

Taking 10 per cent manager’s fee on the gross income from the family’s deals, Kris explained she decided on the figure to give her children a discount after learning most managers or agents in the industry were taking 20 or 25 per cent.

‘I said to my kids “look I’m going to put my heart and soul into this I’m going to work hard and I’ll take 10 because that’ll make it worth my while I’m not going to charge you the industry standard” which I thought was super fair.

I knew how hard I was going to have to work and just wanted to make sure that I didn’t need to get a day job.’

Kris told WSJ Magazine in 2021 she has to be on call ’24/7′, and added: ‘I feel like a fireman because I’m always putting out fires all day every day, on some levels.

‘I think I’m good because they’re my kids and I think I am qualified for so many different life reasons.’

Reflecting on what makes her a good manager, she went on: ‘First of all I think when it’s your child you go over and above anything that would be required of you if you were just a proper person getting a typical paycheck.’

Kris explained that because she’s ‘totally dedicated’ to her children that makes her spend as much time as possible ensuring they succeed in their respective careers and go the ‘extra mile’ for them.

Explaining the most important first step in building her empire in an interview with Forbes she said: ‘I really started building an infrastructure and got the right people in the right positions and in-house counsel and just all of the necessary folks and team members to make the machine work.

‘In the beginning we were like “oh let’s try this or let’s try that” and you finally figure out that really what was working was the things that the girls were most passionate about.

‘Creating those kind of businesses was very successful for us and really resonated in how much joy and and fun you’re getting out of it too because it can’t just be a grind constantly that’s just not healthy.’

Kim’s shapeware brand is estimated to be worth $4 billion while Kylie Cosmetics is valued around $1.2 billion.

Reflecting on how they have made certain products go viral she said: ‘I think identifying what each one of the girls really loves to do. I think people can feel what’s real and what’s not.’

‘Kylie sort of created this cultural moment, if you will, and disrupted an entire beauty industry, showing people that you could buy something without having a lot of marketing around it and launching makeup online. I mean, that was incredible.

‘She was the first one to really do that in such a big way when she came to me and said, “I know exactly what I want to do. I know exactly what I want it to look like. I know exactly what the product should be.” And she was 17. Wow. And I said, “Oh, wow. Okay.”

‘I learn something new every day from these girls. I am not the creative person. I am the business person.’

Sharing her tips on negotiation, the headstrong business woman said: ‘Well if somebody says no you’re talking to the wrong person that’s always my motto.

‘I think in a negotiation a great negotiation is when both sides win if you can give a little and they can give a little and you can come to terms.’

Turning to aesthetics, at 69 years old Kris sought the expertise of Dr. Steven M. Levine – known as the ‘facelift maestro’ – to help her achieve a fresh-faced look, with the celeb favourite doctor’s procedures starting at $45,000 (£33,376).

And the star has made sure to parade her new look at numerous events, recently looking more like Kim’s sister than her mother at the star’s 45th birthday celebrations in London.

Similarly she stole the show at Kim’s All’s Fair premiere last month wearing a vibrant yellow coat dress.

Her 70th celebrations proved she has the most star-studded contacts list in all of Hollywood with the party which was held at Jeff Bezos’s $165 million mansion with a guest list boasting Beyonce, Justin Bieber and Mariah Carey.

Showing no signs of slowing down she said: ‘I never want to think that you’ve exercised everything that you have.

‘I think that to to feel like there’s a lot more to come and there’s more chapters is very exciting for me and it inspires me.’

Yet aside from all the brand success and extravagant events at the heart of it all is still family.

‘I think my legacy is that at I was a great mom an I’m a good grandmother that’s all that really matters.

‘I mean let’s face it it’s just family first to us always and I think that that will always be why we do what we do,’ Kris explained.

She continued: ‘My goal in life when I had kids and they became teenagers and young adults was that every single one of them had something that they found they were passionate about.

‘And that I could help them achieve that as something that could be their life and their their own legacy… something that they could make a living at so that they could be on their own and sustain their lifestyle, whatever they wanted to do whatever their dream was.

‘So one by one that’s the dream for me.’
