Katharine McPhee, 39, and her husband David Foster, 74, have a surprising reason as to why they’ve yet to decorated for the holidays.
The couple — who recently released an updated version of their Christmas album — revealed to PEOPLE that they were legally unable to deck the halls.
‘We were just moving into our new house that we built,’ Katharine said, referring to the Brentwood property they snapped up in 2021.
It’s been under construction for the past few years as they’ve worked to build their dream home where they’ll raise their two-year-old son Rennie.
She continued: ‘And we’ve not been able to get permission to live there yet because of an occupancy problem, and the final certificate from the city.’

But Katharine was happy to report that they just got the all clear and are ‘very excited.’
‘I just got an email that says it’s approved, so of course I’m very excited,’ she said.
‘That means I get to get the boxes from storage and break out the Christmas. I go crazy with music and decorations.’
Katharine stressed that she will ‘never take an opportunity to not celebrate the holidays’ and is happy to go all out for her son.
The couple — who wed in 2019 — have been hard at work producing their own renditions of holiday classics for their album, Christmas Songs, over the past two years.
It was first released as a seven-song album in 2022 and they’ve since record seven more songs.
David explained that making Christmas music is an enjoyable experience.
‘When you’re trying to make a hit, there’s so much pressure. With Christmas music there’s no rules. You can be as corny as you want,’ he said.
Katharine and David took to the stage earlier this month to perform together at The Grove’s annual tree lighting ceremony in Los Angeles.
And now, Katharine is among the star-studded musical acts performing during this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC.
She braved the rain in New York City Tuesday to rehearse.

The recent holiday festivities come after a difficult year for the couple, who have been mourning the loss of their son’s nanny.
In August, Yadira Calito, 55, a nanny for the couple’s two-year-old son Rennie, was hit by a car and then dragged for 20 feet at a Toyota Dealership.
She was struck by an 84-year-old woman, who had crashed her SUV into the customer reception area. She had apparently pressed down on the gas instead of the brakes.
In the wake of the tragedy, McPhee canceled the final two shows of her concert tour with her husband in Jakarta, Indonesia, upon hearing the news.
The elderly driver had reportedly been taking in her car for a service when she hit the gas instead of the brakes, causing the vehicle to collide with Calito.
Calito was rushed to hospital in a critical condition and later pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV was not arrested.
The singer, who had been busy performing in Asia with her 16-time Grammy Award-winning partner David, shared her family had endured a ‘horrible tragedy’ in a statement posted to her Instagram at the time.
It added: ‘Dearest Jakarta fans, it’s with heavy heart I announce I have to miss our final two shows of our Asia run.
‘David and I have had a horrible tragedy in our family and at least one of us needs to get back home to our family.

‘Please know how sorry I am and how much I wish to return one day and perform for you all. Love Katharine.’
The couple addressed the tragedy in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, where Foster acknowledged just how difficult it had been on his wife.
‘It’s been tough for her,’ he told ET in September. ‘Yeah, it’s been tough. She’s managing,’ he said.
‘Than you,’ his wife said.
