Karen Gillan and Alex Kingston Reunite for ‘Mother-Daughter Bonding Time’ but Non-Whovian Fans Mistakenly Believe They Are Actually Related

Karen Gillan and Alex Kingston sent Doctor Who fans wild on Tuesday as they reunited for a shopping trip.

The two actresses starred opposite each other in the hit BBC show alongside Matt Smith, during series five, six and seven.

Karen, 36, played the Doctor’s companion, Amy Pond, while Alex, 60, played recurring character River Song, who is later revealed to be Amy’s daughter, Melody Pond.

Karen took to her TikTok to share a video of the pair going Christmas shopping together, and jokingly captioned it: ‘Took my daughter shopping’.

In the clip, she addressed her followers, saying: ‘We’re Christmas shopping! Mother daughter bonding time. Let’s go shopping!’

She then filmed them on an escalator as she asked Alex what she was planning on buying.

Alex replied: ‘I’m going to buy a cookery book’ as Karen laughed and replied: ‘Ooh exciting!’

The video then cut to Karen lying in bed yawning as she explained: ‘We forgot to shoot an ending for that video and it is a very different day now and I’m in bed so this is the end. This is the end of the shopping video, I hope this was a good ending.’ 

Doctor Who fans were thrilled to see the stars reuniting and took to the comments to praise the pair for the ‘Pond family content’ saying it reminded them of their childhoods.

However, many other followers who were not familiar with Doctor Who mistakenly thought that Karen’s ‘daughter’ comments meant that Alex was her mother.

One person wrote: ‘ok my mind is blown I did not know they were related!!!’ while another echoed: ‘Oh my god I didn’t realise that was your mum!!!’

A third gushed: ‘wow…you have the best mom ever. loved her in ER and Gilmore Girls’ while a fourth added: ‘Woah woah woah wait, she is your mom !! Way to bury the lead’.

Someone else commented: ‘no wonder I love you….how did I not know she was your mom.’

And a ninth admitted: ‘my first thought was “dang, Karen’s mom looks a lot like alex kingston” then my mind corrected itself’.

A second fan wrote: ‘the amount of non Whovians in the comments that think Alex is your mom is hilarious’ while a third added: ‘The fact that so many people will see this and not get the joke’.

An eighth confessed: ‘cackling over the people thinking Alex Kingston is actually Karen’s mother ahsjsjdj. ICONS’ while a ninth said: ‘I’m loving the confused section of the comments that clearly don’t watch doctor who.’

And someone else patiently explained: ‘not enough doctor who fans in these comments. Alex kingston is the daughter Karen’s character is her mother but timey wimey wibblywobbly stuff’.
