Josh Patterson has revealed that being ‘villianised’ on Made In Chelsea contributed to his ‘toxic’ relationship with Binky Felstead.
The reality star rose to fame as ‘JP, with his romance charted on the E4 reality show that made them both famous, and his various ups and downs over time.
During the 13th season – their last full-time stint on the show – Binky announced she and JP were expecting a child but they split 15 months after daughter India was born.
On the show, JP came under fire from fans for his attitude, with Josh later revealing that behind-the-scenes he was battling with terrible bouts of depression and crippling anxiety.
He has now reflected on the scrutiny he came under on the show – which he joined at the age of 26 – and admitted he’s no longer the same person aged 34.
Made In Chelsea’s Josh Patterson has revealed being ‘battered and villainised’ on the show resulted in his ‘toxic and hurtful’ relationship with Binky Felstead
Speaking on Giovanna Fletcher’s podcast, Happy Mum Happy Baby, Josh reflected on his romance with Binky, confessing: ‘My only interaction with love has been toxic and hurtful, and has caused me a lot of pain.
‘I’m scared of love. I’m scared of building those connections. And so having met Indies mom on the show, it kind of maybe pushed me in a direction that I ordinarily wouldn’t have been. And I wouldn’t have got into that relationship if I didn’t want to.
‘But I think although it was a wonderful thing in the sense that it put me in a position where I met someone that I wanted to be with, because I’d never had a serious girlfriend prior to that, and I was 26 years of age. At the same time, I had no idea how to be a boyfriend or how to be in a relationship.
‘And I think rather than this is no aim at her, but I think when you have someone who equally has got a lot going on and can miss read signals, and then you have producers and a show in their ear, and they’re villainizing you for making the most innocent mistakes, you know, like, we filmed a trip abroad once and I just wanted to go waterskiing with the boys and be on the beach and be a kid.
‘And that had nothing to do with me not wanting to be with the person that I was with. I was just like in my element, because I love to be outside and explore.
‘But then storylines would be created, that I was neglecting the person and I just kept getting battered the whole time. And it was so difficult for me because it was like you’re punishing me and I believe I’m a good person.’
While Josh is believed to be single, Binky married businessman Max Darnton in 2021 and the couple share son Wolfie, two, and Wilder, seven months.
Yet there is no anonymity between exes Josh and Binky, with the star revealing they happily co-parent India without any issues and he loves spending time with the sons Binky shares with Max.

He mused: ‘I think there are times when naturally her [India’s] mother and I aren’t going to agree on things, but she’ll never know about that. Even if we dislike one another, which isn’t the case, she’ll never know about that, because that doesn’t achieve anything.
‘You know, she has a photo of her mother and her by a bedside table. Her mum is a huge part of the household.
‘I absolutely adore her brothers, they are just the sweetest things. It’s really important for me that I’m in their life, as much as they’re in our life, I don’t want there to be that separation between the two households, you know, when they’re slightly older, if we do trips, they’re more than welcome to come.
‘And it sounds really strange. You know, I’m sure some might react to this. But there is a love for her brothers, they are her brothers. And so although they’re not my children, I would treat them the same, you know, in my household.’
Binky previously spoke about the demise of her relationship with Josh, telling MailOnline: ‘Towards the end it just wasn’t right between us as a couple, but there was no shouting and screaming. No drama.
‘Ever since then it’s been really fine. We just both focus on India, and she still sees us together, chatting, being friendly. It’s just normal. And we don’t really have time to think about it.’
