Jonathan Ross has been hit by huge backlash from furious viewers after he referred to the Irish actor Cillian Murphy as a ‘British star’ during the 2024 Academy Awards.

The presenter, 63, fronted ITV’s coverage of the glitzy event for the first time, but angered many viewers for failing to note the Peaky Blinders star’s heritage during the ceremony.

Cillian was awarded Best Actor for his acclaimed performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and in his speech he said: ‘I am a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.’

Acknowledging that ‘we are all living in Oppenheimer’s world now’, the actor added: ‘I would like to dedicate this to the peacemakers of the world.’

Cillian also ended his speech by saying: ‘Go raibh maith agat,’ which means ‘thank you’ in Irish.

However, despite the star notably showcased his Irish heritage during the ceremony, viewers were irked that host Jonathan repeatedly referred to him during conversations about British stars nominated at the awards.

One tweeted: ‘Who has ever thought Cillian Murphy was British?? LMAO, Jonathan Ross is off his rocker.’

Another angry viewer complained: ‘Sorry but did Jonathan Ross just talk about British people winning all the awards and then include Cillian Murphy??? #Oscars,’ another asked.

A third raged: ‘Took 3 mins for Jonathan Ross on ITV to claim Cillian’s win as ‘our’ win like he literally got on stage and pointed out he was Irish?’

‘Not Jonathan Ross saying British nominee for best actor referring to IRISH Cillian Murphy. Just know he’d be so fuming,’ one viewer added.

Jonathan also infuriated many viewers for making an ‘unnecessary’ comment about the late Matthew Perry, after he was included in the Oscars’ In Memoriam segment.

The Academy Awards paid tribute to Friends star Matthew – who was left out of the BAFTAs annual memoriam list last month – Michael Gambon, Alan Arkin, Paul Reubens, Harry Belafonte, as well as Curb Your Enthusiasm star Richard Lewis, after he passed away on February 27th at the age of 76.

Andrea Bocelli was joined by his son Matteo as they sang his classic Time to Say Goodbye together and honoured a number of late stars who died in the last year.
