Johnny Depp is attempting a comeback with his first film in four years, the indie period drama Jeanne du Barry.
The 60-year-old actor plays King Louis XV in this period drama alongside actress/writer/director Maiwenn in the film, arriving in theaters May 2.
The new trailer for Jeanne du Barry was released on Wednesday (via Vertical YouTube) offering new footage from the film.
The film had its world premiere as the opening night film of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, released theatrically in France on the same day, with Vertical releasing the film in the U.S.
The trailer begins by revealing the film is set in France 1768, showing Depp enter a room flanked by many guards.

A title card reads that his character Louis XV, ‘had many lovers… but only one stole his heart,’ while a male character tells another that the King must meet Jeanne.
Maiwenn’s title character is introduced, making a regal introduction, as she’s told not to look the king in the eyes and, ‘one does not show feelings at Court.’

King Louis is seen walking into a regal event with Jeanne and is heard saying, ‘I want to be by her side. When the sun rises, and when it sets.’
He’s seen presenting her with a magnificent necklace, before telling her he wants her to stay with him at his palace in Versailles.
A female character says there is, ‘A vile rumor that has Versailles abuzz,’ while some of the other women conspire to get Jeanne removed from the court.

The trailer winds down with a number of dramatic shots of Louis and Jeanne, as one woman says their tryst is ‘grotesque,’ when Louis’ handler responds.
