Despite his shocking death in the final season of Yellowstone, rancher John Dutton remains a presence in the new spin-off about his family.

Being a member of the family, however, appeared to be something Kayce (Luke Grimes) kept close to his chest while serving in the military.
'All those years of door-kicking, you never once mentioned that you're some Rockefeller,' Kayce's pal and former Navy SEAL teammate Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) told the Dutton, according to People.
'That was the best part about being a SEAL. Being a Dutton didn't matter,' Kayce replied.

John was also brought up during a conversation between Kayce and his son Tate, according to People.
'The only reason I'm gripping this place so tight is because it's the only thing I have to offer you, son,' Kayce told his son of their East Camp ranch.
'But what if I'm not sure I want it?' Tate asks.
