Jewel got candid about how her approach to parenting 12-year-old son Kase has evolved.
The 49-year-old singer — who recently addressed her romance with Kevin Costner — revealed she has become more ‘present’ with her only child, whom she shares with ex-husband Ty Murray, during an interview with People on Monday.
‘It’s changed over the years,’ she said. ‘I’m a lot more present. I think I’m a present mom now, which I really worked hard on. It wasn’t easy in the beginning for me to be really present.’
The star emphasized the importance of providing emotional support for Kase as well.
‘I’m definitely a teaching mom, whether he likes that or not,’ she continued. ‘ I’m the kind of mom that wants to explain probably too much that might be on the negative list, but that’s the kind of mom I am. I want to break things down. I want to help him understand. I hope I’m a good listener.’

However, according to Jewel, their time together isn’t solely focused on serious mother-son moments; they also cherish their playful and ‘silly’ interactions.
‘I think if you asked my son what I’m like, we laugh a lot,’ she explained. ‘We’re very, very, very silly.
‘We’re ridiculous. We wrestle a lot, my son and I. I didn’t think that’s the type of mom I’d be, but we play fight every day. It’s so funny.’
The Grammy winner also took to her Instagram to share a sweet oil painting of Kase she made for new new art exhibit The Portal: An Art Experience by Jewel at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
The portrait of Kase not only celebrates motherhood but also serves as a documentation of her son at his current near-teenage stage. “
‘I have less mothering ahead of me than I have behind me, and it’s so sad, so it was a way of me dealing with my own feelings about my son getting older and the transitions we’re going to both be making in our life,’ Jewel says.

In a separate interview with the outlet, Jewel addressed her romantic relationship with the Yellowstone star, but denied a romance was behind her current state of happiness.
‘I found love, and I’m not talking about Kevin’s. I’m so happy, irrelevant of a man. It has nothing to do with being in a relationship or not being in one,’ she told the outlet.
‘I’m just happy,’ she insisted, adding, ‘I’m good.’
