Rick Springfield is ‘always searching’ for a remedies for the depression he’s suffered from since his adolescence, attempting suicide at age 17 and contemplating suicide as recent as age 68.
The 75-year-old Grammy winner recently tried ketamine therapy but he ‘wasn’t a big fan. It made me feel heavy and machinelike. It didn’t change much in me.’
‘I [microdosed] acid, and that was actually a little better,’ Rick told People on Thursday.
‘I hadn’t done that since I was in my 20s, but it was a great high. I don’t mean to push drugs on anyone, but I’m not averse to anything that helps me be happier and a better person. I could use some help in that area. I’m always searching.’
Springfield (born Richard Springthorpe) is trying alternative therapy since he cut back on drinking alcohol two years ago following his 2011 arrest for DUI in Malibu when he took a plea deal for the lesser charge of reckless driving in his 1963 Corvette Stingray.
‘That has actually helped more than anything,’ the Jessie’s Girl hitmaker noted.

‘I was drinking quite a bit, and as you get older, it’s kind of a natural thing to drop all that s***. I’m not [in] AA — I mean, I know a lot of people it’s worked for. I’ll have a couple of sips of vodka or something when I’m onstage, but I don’t drink any other time.’
Publicly sharing his struggles with depression has helped Rick ‘a lot.’
‘I want people to know they’re not alone,’ Springfield said. ‘It’s like sharing grief when someone dies, it’s very powerful.’
The Australian-American musician receives a lot of support from his wife of 40 years, Barbara Porter, with whom he shares two sons – actor Liam, 39; and child therapist Joshua, 36.
‘She’s been my rock, and I’ve been her rock,’ Rick explained.
‘It trades off. She’s definitely the one that has been the core of our relationship, without question, but as we get older, we both go off the deep end and the other one’s got to be there to throw the lifesaver and pull them back to shore.’
Whenever the couple argue, they usually start laughing because ‘most of our arguments are about things we love, like the dog or a kid. But we always make up.’
‘There’s been tough times when we’ve tried to find a third person to talk to, and I think that’s really important,’ Springfield said.
‘I guess if anyone asks, “How do you stay married?” I just say, “Don’t get divorced.” That’s really all it is.’
The Lose Myself singer – who released his 23rd studio album Automatic in 2023 – is next scheduled to perform March 19 at Macon City Auditorium in Macon, GA.
Rick – who gets 5.5M monthly listeners on Spotify – will then kick off his 34-date I Want My ’80s Tour on May 29 in Florida alongside supporting acts John Waite, Wang Chung, Paul Young, and John Cafferty.
