Jennifer Lawrence Defends David O. Russell’s Directing Amid Amy Adams’ Claims

Jennifer Lawrence shared her perspective on working with director David O. Russell, after her American Hustle co-star Amy Adams claimed that he made her cry.

Lawrence, 35, spoke about Russell’s, 67, controversial directing style during a recent appearance on The New York Times’ The Interview podcast, stating her experience was different from Adams’, 51.

Her co-star previously claimed the filmmaker brought her to tears during the making of the Oscar-nominated film, and added that Lawrence appeared to remain unaffected by his behavior, comparing her to ‘Teflon.’

Lawrence, who was 23 when the movie was filmed in 2013, agreed that Russell’s style of directing didn’t phase her, and that she is ‘not sensitive.’

However, she acknowledged that perhaps Russell was ‘harder on [Amy] than he was on me.’

Speaking of his behavior on set, she said: ‘I really felt like with David that was his way of communicating in a non–bulls**t way. I never felt like he was degrading or yelling at me.’

‘If he didn’t like something, he was just like: “That was terrible. Looked like s**t. Do it better.” And that was a very helpful conversation,’ she said.

Lawrence went on to assert that she’s ‘not sensitive’ adding, ‘I don’t know how you can be in this industry.’

‘I mean, these young girls are hopefully gonna grow up in a different time.’

When she was asked again about Adams’ experience, Lawrence backtracked her comments about not being sensitive.

‘Maybe he was harder on her than he was on me. I don’t know,’ she said.

‘I mean, yes, of course I’m sensitive. I’m really sensitive. I don’t know. I’m so sensitive. I can’t believe I just said that… I’m not sensitive about acting. I’m not competitive about acting.’

Lawrence also praised Russell for helping her learn how to work with different directors.

‘I stay loose. David O. Russell really taught me. Because of David it’s never really mattered what the director’s methodology is.’

Russell helped Lawrence earn three Oscar nominations, including a Best Actress win for 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook.

They also collaborated on American Hustle and 2015’s Joy.

Adams received Oscar nods for her work with Russell on The Fighter (2010) and American Hustle.

Adams shared her difficulties on the American Hustle set in an interview with British GQ in 2016, stating she would often cry.

‘I was really just devastated on set. I mean, not every day, but most,’ she said.

Speaking of her co-star, she said: ‘Jennifer doesn’t take any of it on. She’s Teflon. And I am not Teflon. But I also don’t like to see other people treated badly. It’s not okay with me.’

She added, ‘Life, to me, is more important than movies. It really taught me how to separate work and home. Because I was like, “I cannot bring this experience home with me to my daughter.”‘

In 2022, actor Christian Bale, 51, said he played ‘mediator’ between Adams and the director on the American Hustle set.

‘You’re dealing with two such incredible talents there.’

‘Look, if I feel like we got anywhere close — and you only ever get somewhere close to achieving; our imagination is too incredible to ever entirely achieve it — but if you get anywhere close to it, and when you’re working with people of the crazy creative talent of Amy or of David, there are gonna be upsets. But they are f*****g phenomenal.’

‘Also, you got to remember, it was the nature of the characters as well. Right? Those characters were not people who back down from anything, right?’ he added.

American Hustle garnered 10 overall nominations at the 2014 Academy Awards, including acting nods for Lawrence, Bale, and Adams.
