In a recent interview Matt revealed how his role as Prince Philip in The Crown, helped secure him the position.
He told The Telegraph: ‘I was in luck. I’m not sure that Thomas had a great knowledge of English actors or their work.’
Matt added: ‘But he had watched The Crown and he’d enjoyed it.’
Admitting he’s a big fan of the German director, he continued: ‘He’s sort of impressive. I’d always thought that if he ever did work in London, I’d check in and go and see it, because that’s the kind of theatre I want to be engaged with: the stuff that tries to push things to the edge of… everywhere.’
It comes after Matt was been announced as the leading man in Sky’s TV series adaptation of Nick Cave’s novel, The Death Of Bunny Munro.
The actor will take on the titular role of Bunny Munro – a grieving sex addict who has recently lost his wife Libby to suicide.
Nick, 66, will serve as an executive producer in the six-part series which is written by BAFTA Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy) and directed by Isabella Eklöf (Industry, Holiday),
The story follows self-professed lothario Bunny Munro and his young son called Bunny Junior as they make an increasingly out-of-control road trip across the south of England.
The two struggle to contain their grief in very different ways.
As Bunny bounces from one sales pitch to the next, trying to seduce any woman he meets, Bunny Junior tries to talk to the ghost of his mother and distract himself from the realisation his dad’s life is crumbling around him.
As he starts to unravel, Bunny realises he must do something to rescue his son from his own outdated notions of what it is to be a man.
The search for an actor to play the young Bunny Junior is already under way, with the hope of uncovering an exciting new talent.
Matt, whose acting credits include The Crown, Doctor Who and House of The Dragon, said: ‘To work alongside Nick Cave on The Death of Bunny Munro feels like a great honour. It’s a brilliant exploration of love, grief, and chaos.
‘At its heart a deep, difficult, and tender story about a father and son, coping with loss and change.
‘Clerkenwell Films and Sky feels like the perfect home to make such a bold story and Pete has delivered such wonderful scripts, both funny and heart breaking in equal measure.
‘I can’t wait to collaborate with Isabella and begin the journey with everyone at Clerkenwell.’
The Windsors actor Hugh Skinner was also in attendance at the event and wore a smart black coat
Actor Roger Allam also made an appearance and looked dapper in a brown suit and jazzy silk scarf

Nick added: ‘Finally, someone with the courage to take on this unholy tale.
‘I am thrilled that Sky and Clerkenwell Films are bringing Bunny to life, in all his flawed glory, and I can think of nobody better than Matt Smith to play him.’
The Death of Bunny Munro is produced by Clerkenwell Films, who are owned by BBC Studios, in association with Sky Studios.
The series will begin filming in Spring 2024 across the south of England, with the release date to confirmed at a future date.
It will be available on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK.
