Jane Fonda has admitted that she still hasn’t discussed the Barbarella remake with Sydney Sweeney, but will be open to sharing her ideas ‘if she asks’.
The screen legend, 87, famously starred as the astronaut in 1968 adaptation of the French comic book series by Jean-Claude Forest.
While White Lotus and Euphoria star Sydney, 27, is set to step into her shoes and take on the lead role in a new version, which is to be directed by British film-maker Edgar Wright.
Despite Jane previously expressing her concerns about a remake, it appears that she still has plenty of thoughts on what the new version could look like, though she stressed in a new interview that she’s yet to be approached by anyone.
Speaking to Vogue about the Barbarella reboot, Jane said: ‘Nobody’s asked me about it. I wish I could do a remake of Barbarella, but I wouldn’t play her again. I have a lot of ideas about what that could look like.’
However, when questioned if she’s up for sharing said ideas, she responded: ‘If Sydney asks, I’ll let her know.’

The film star added: ‘I don’t know her and I’ve never met her, but I think she’s great. I’m sure she’ll be a fantastic Barbarella.’
Jane’s words comes six months after Sydney told Variety that she would ‘absolutely love’ to meet the original Barbarella, after the star previously shared her ‘worry’ over the film.
While little has been revealed about the remake, and whether the storyline and style will differ from the original, Jane sounded skeptical when asked what she thinks about it in an interview in 2023.
‘I try not to. Because I worry about what it’s going to be,’ the longtime leading lady told The Hollywood Reporter, before implying that she had a few ideas of her own on how to shoot Barbarella, but it was met with deaf ears by the producer.
‘I had an idea of how to do it that [original producer] Dino De Laurentiis, when he was still alive, wouldn’t listen to,’ Fonda explained during the THR interview.
The actress would go on to confess that Barbarella ‘could have been a truly feminist movie.’
Not much is known about this new version, but Vadim’s take on the story follows an astronaut from the 41st century who sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy, according to a synopsis on IMDb and Deadline.
The original film wasn’t a hit with fans at the box office, but it has since gone on to become a cult classic, and it solidified Jane as a bonafide sex symbol at the time.

Along with Jane, the original Barbarella also starred John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O’Shea, Marcel Marceau, David Hemmings, Ugo Tognazzi and Claude Dauphin.
Jane has offered some criticism of her Barbarella movie over the years, but she has come to see Vadim’s version with more of a sense of humor, she confessed during an interview with CBS in 2005.
News of the remake with Sydney in the titular role went public in October 2022, and was confirmed by the actress in an Instagram post, where she declared, ‘time to save the universe,’ in the caption, alongside an illustrated poster from the original movie.
A story by Deadline revealed Sweeney will also serve as executive producer, to go along with her lead role in the film.
So far, an official release date for Sweeney’s Barbarella reboot has not yet been revealed.
