Jamie Lee Curtis and Zooey Deschanel Shine at Spinal Tap II Premiere with Christopher Guest and Jonathan Scott

The amps went up to 11 on Tuesday evening as Los Angeles venue The Egyptian Theatre hosted the US premiere of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

Directed by Rob Reiner, the forthcoming film comes 41 years after This Is Spinal Tap redefined the mockumentary genre with its behind the scenes look at the hapless antics of a fictional British rock group.

Leading the arrivals on Tuesday night, Jamie Lee Curtis was on hand to support husband Christopher Guest, who reprises his role as hapless rock guitarist Nigel Tufnel in the new film.

The legendary actress, 66, looked appropriately glamorous in a sequined silver dress as she made her way across the red carpet with Guest.

Bringing some additional sparkle to the event, Zooey Deschanel caught the eye in a patterned black minidress and embellished tights after arriving on the arm of TV presenter fiancé Jonathan Scott.

The American actress, 45, who does not feature in the new film, rounded off her red carpet look with a pair of buckled leather heels as she mingled with fellow guests.

The new film has once again been produced by Bleecker Street – the company responsible for delivering This Is Spinal Tap – and will feature cameo appearances from several music icons including Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.

It will follow the ageing Spinal Tap stars as they perform one last time after reuniting following a 15 year hiatus.

Director Rob Reiner said: ‘So happy to be working with the folks at Bleecker Street who are passionate about keeping Tap’s legacy alive and happy to give Marty DiBergi another shot at relevancy.’

Following its 2024 announcement, Bleeker Street CEO Andrew Karpen and president Kent Sanderson said: ‘We feel privileged for the opportunity to work with Rob Reiner and the brilliant minds behind the original This Is Spinal Tap and to be part of a film that has resonated with so many.

‘This Is Spinal Tap isn’t just a movie – it’s a cultural touchstone that pioneered the mockumentary genre and left an indelible mark on both film and music.

‘Returning to this world through Spinal Tap II is an extraordinary chance to celebrate its legacy while creating something fresh for both new and devoted audiences.’

This Is Spinal Tap has a whopping 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has been praised by many thanks to a hilarious script and numerous memorable quotes, among them the legendary “These go to 11” – a reference to the amplifiers used by the band.

In 2002 it was chosen for preservation by the National Film Registry, as the Library of Congress declared it was ‘culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.’

Reiner originally discussed the possibility of a sequel in 2022 when he told Deadline that he hadn’t decided to move forward with it until they conceived a strong concept.

‘The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, ‘Why don’t you do another one?” he said. ‘For so many years, we said, ‘Nah.’

‘It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.’

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues goes on general release from September 12.
