Inside the Sydney Mansion Once Home to Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, Now Selling for $37.5 Million

The Sydney mansion that once hosted ‘Hollywood royalty’ Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman has sold for $37.5 million.

In 2000, the former couple stayed at the home as guests of director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Catherine Martin, who previously owned the sprawling, heritage-listed estate.

Set on lavish grounds in inner-city Darlinghurst, the beautifully maintained Italianate 19th-century home boasts seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

The current owners first listed the home, known as Iona, on the market last year for $40 million, but they failed to find a buyer after five months.

It was recently re-listed for $27 million, which attracted four offers, with the successful buyers settling in 12 days.

The Wentworth Courier reported that the home was sold to an eastern suburbs family after a hotly contested private bidding process that saw the final price soar $10 million over the new price guide.

Luhrmann and his wife Catherine leased the property in the late 1990s and used it as a ‘home/office’ for their company, Bazmark.

The couple eventually bought it in 2006 for $10million after making the box office smash Strictly Ballroom (1992) and the Nicole Kidman hit Moulin Rouge (2001).

Kidman and Cruise reportedly attended a party at the home to celebrate the completion of Moulin Rouge not long before the Hollywood power couple split in 2001.

After moving to New York, production designer Martin, 59, and Luhrmann, 61, sold Iona in 2016 for $16 million to its current owners, stockbroker Tim Eustace and his partner Salvador Panui.

They made a series of improvements to the estate.

Famed as one of Sydney’s grand mansions, the 2716-square-metre heritage-listed property was completed in 1888 and was once a private hospital.

Located in a secluded tree-lined patch of Sydney’s busy Darlinghurst, just 2 km from the CBD, the gorgeous pad is a delightful mix of luxury and Old World design.

Features include ornamental iron lace, stained glass windows and Victorian-era-styled tessellated tiling.

Catherine designed the decorative wallpaper that helped maintain the home’s 19th century charm.

Covering two levels, highlights include a private drawing room, a cellar and a billiards room, which boasts a chandelier, statue and fireplace.

There’s also a sitting room, oversized kitchen, butler’s pantry and private dining room.

The main bedroom occupies an entire corner of the upper floor and includes a huge dressing room and access to a large verandah.

Other highlights include a nursery, a library as well as a private apartment.

Modern touches to the estate include a large pool, entertainment deck and gym.

The expansive grounds also include decorative water features and a Japanese garden.
