Speaking to the publication, Indya explained that their family struggled to understand their gender identity and caused their childhood to ‘take on a darker turn’.
Their parents were Jehovah’s Witnesses and had strict ideas on what it means to be masculine or feminine.
Indya said: ‘I grew up learning that gender is a social and cultural construction based on differences, because I looked different from the archetype they had mentally constructed about me.
‘I started to resent my parents, they disciplined me for being me. They were subconscious behaviors and I didn’t realize they were a problem until my parents were bothered by seeing them.

‘Growing up as a trans girl, it was very difficult for me to understand what the expectations were around me and trying to meet them all the time was very stressful and prevented me from enjoying my childhood.’
They explained that the situation got so dire that they often got into fights with their parents and brother as they felt ‘ashamed’.
They said: ‘I began to learn to protect myself by being dishonest and lying about my sexuality. I couldn’t have the freedom and security of being transparent with what I liked.
‘I distanced myself more and more from my parents and my brother, we didn’t trust each other, and vice versa. The tension and violence at home were becoming more and more pressing.’
Eventually Indya went into foster care at the age of 14 and their foster mother, who was also a trans woman, allowed her to use hormone replacement therapy for the first time.
