Ian Thorpe Lists Woollahra Apartment for .8M After Price Drop

Ian Thorpe is parting ways with his stylish Woollahra apartment just two years after snapping it up, listing the designer pad with a price guide of $2.8 million, almost 1.3 million less than the original asking price.

The five-time gold medallist’s sleek three-bedroom residence sits inside the renowned Harry Seidler-designed Arlington building on Edgecliff Road, one of Sydney’s most sought-after postcodes.

Listed on realestate.com.au, the property is set to go under the hammer on December 4 with Ray White Double Bay agents Jordan L’Estrange and Warren Ginsberg guiding the sale.

Thorpe, who recently turned 43 while celebrating with friends on Lord Howe Island, purchased the split-level apartment for $2.79 million in July 2023.

The property had previously been marketed for as much as $3.5 million last year, after failing to sell at auction with a vendor bid of $3.95 million in 2022.

The modern apartment spans two light-filled levels and boasts panoramic city-to-harbour views stretching from the skyline to Manly.

With generous proportions throughout, it features three spacious bedrooms, a large entertainer’s kitchen, and a sun-drenched north-east facing balcony perfect for enjoying Sydney’s summer evenings.

The Edgecliff Road property has most recently been leased for $1,850 per week, offering both investment potential and enviable lifestyle appeal thanks to its proximity to Double Bay’s buzzing café and shopping strip.

According to the report, buyers from as far as Greece and France were on the phone showing interest in the eastern suburbs property.

However, despite huge interest in the property, it wasn’t enough for a sale.

Ian bought the property for $2.75 million in 2017, and later was listed with a price guide of $3.7 million through Black Diamondz agents, Courtney Wong and Monika Tu.

It comes after Ian splurged an eye-watering $2.79 million on a glorious pad in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Located in Edgecliff, 4kms from the CBD, the three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment is in the Arlington complex, designed by celebrated Australian architect Harry Seidler.

Completed in the 1960s, the block is famed for its chic ultra-modern style and location which overlooks some of the city’s most sought-after real estate.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the last time Thorpe’s new digs were traded was in 2016 when the buyer paid $2.37 million for the prestige home.

Spread over two levels, Thorpe’s spacious flat features stunning views of Sydney Harbour.

The property is a boutique apartment in an old 1860s mansion, with the Olympic star having an eye to downsize from the property.

Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald, letting agent Courtney Wong said the home is the ‘best one in the building’, situated away from the street.

‘It’s completely private and secluded,’ he added.

Despite the property’s $3.7 million price tag, the letting agent said the unit is a perfect ‘stepping stone’ for someone who can’t afford a house.
