Hilary Duff broke her silence on the long-rumored tension with her sister Haylie, admitting for the first time that ‘family drama’ played a part in her years away from music.
While appearing on Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast, the Lizzie McGuire alum, 38, discussed the release of her first single in a decade.
‘It was always going to happen,’ Hilary said of returning to music. ‘There’s no way that that was not going to be a part of my story.’
Reflecting on how her life and priorities have shifted over the years, she continued, ‘Obviously, it’s taken a lot of twists and turns and ups and downs and all of those things, but I have this crazy connection with fans that I’ve known since I was nine, ten years old, and I just want to connect with them again.’
Hilary went on to explain that her comeback was about honesty and feeling emotionally ready to share her current reality.
‘We have gone through a lot of the same things – whether that’s complicated relationships, anxiety, raising kids, divorces, trying to find yourself in adulthood, family drama… Finally I felt safe enough and comfortable in my own family to step outside and open that part of myself up again,’ she said.

While the actress didn’t elaborate, her mention of ‘family drama’ comes after years of speculation that she and Haylie Duff, 40, had fallen out.Â
Since 2019, the once inseparable siblings have not been photographed publicly and appear to have little online interaction with one another. Â
The rumored feud between the sisters reportedly stems from tension involving Hilary’s husband, Matthew Koma, and Haylie’s fiancé, Matthew Rosenberg.Â
Celebrity gossip outlet DeuxMoi previously claimed the men ‘don’t get along,’ leading to strain between the Duff sisters, though neither has ever publicly addressed the alleged distance in their relationship.
Representatives for both Hilary and Haylie Duff did not immediately respond to The Daily Mail’s request for comment.

After its release, some fans to speculate on whether the tune could be about her ex-boyfriend, Joel Madden.Â
Duff, now 38, dated the Good Charlotte frontman, 46, when she was 16 and he was 25.Â

‘It is definitely about a brief experience that I had in my—a long, long time ago,’ she told Vogue of the song, which she wrote with husband Matthew Koma.
‘But it is not totally autobiographical. I took a few artistic liberties just to make the song work structurally, but the gist is the gist,’ she continued.
‘I was looking back on this relationship and thinking about whether this guy had a habit of dating younger women or whether I was “special.”
‘The whole experience was super therapeutic to write about, but being so vulnerable through your music can be really scary.’

In the pop-rock song, Duff wails, ‘I can’t put it on her, she’s a sweet kid / But she’s taking the bait like we all did / She looks like all of your girls but blonder / A little like me, just younger.’
She continues, ‘Bet she loves when she hears you say / “You’re so mature for your agе, babe” / She looks like shе could be your daughter / Like me before I got smarter.’
The controversial track has caused quite the stir online, with some fans claiming that Duff was ‘calling out’ Madden on the song.

Their relationship recently sparked outrage online after an old Cosmopolitan interview with Duff resurfaced on Reddit.
In the interview, the former child star was asked who she lost her virginity to.
‘I had a 26-year-old boyfriend,’ she replied, in reference to Madden. ‘So everyone can make their own assumptions about what I was doing.’
A number of fans expressed their disapproval, with one writing, ‘It’s gross how these age gaps were normalized back then. I don’t remember if there was any outrage over this relationship.’
Other comments called the age-gap relationship ‘nasty’.
Another fan pointed to the fact that Hilary is still friends with Joel and his wife Nicole Richie.
‘The fact that she’s friends with him and his wife Nicole Richie today is crazy, like dinner dates and everything.’
