Though she did not reveal why she needed to undergo the transplant, she previously opened up about how her kidneys started shutting down when she was pregnant with her son in 2003.

She said that was due to type 1 diabetes, which she was diagnosed with when she was six years old, according to her 2013 blog post

‘[Doctors] told me that once I deliver, my kidneys would be in a downward spiral that they could not stop,’ she wrote.

She said that her son went on to arrive prematurely and afterwards, her kidneys retained only 30 percent of their function.

Brooks recalled being told how she nearly died and fortunately made it to the emergency room in time to save her life due to impaired oxygen levels.

In the hospital, she began dialysis treatments until she underwent a double organ transplant of a new kidney and pancreas.

She noted how she was just 24 years old and was ‘the youngest patient in the dialysis center.’

‘For the past eight years I have not suffered from any signs of rejection from either organ,’ she said at the time.

In the comments section, she received many sweet messages of support.

Fellow HGTV stars Ty Pennington, Jasmine Roth and Anthony Elle all left comments for Brooks.
