HGTV co-stars who are mother and daughter reunite years after bitter public feud

Former HGTV mother-daughter duo Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak Hawk are mending their relationship after having a public fallout.

Starsiak Hawk has revealed that she and her mom are in a better place over two years after their clash became public. 

The women starred on the house-flipping series Good Bones for eight seasons between 2016 and 2023.

Starsiak Hawk told People magazine this week, ‘It took us a lot of time to get [to a bad place in our relationship], so I think it takes a lot of time to kind of get out of it as well.’

She shared, ‘We were all together for the holidays, so we’re all amicable. We’re not like best friends that braid each other’s hair on Saturday nights or anything, but it’s good.’

The reality TV star spoke candidly about family tension in an August 2023 episode of her podcast Mina AF, revealing there was conflict between her and her mom, as well as her brother Tad Starsiak.

The women starred on the house-flipping series Good Bones for eight seasons between 2016 and 2023

That September she spoke to People about filming the final season of their home renovation series.

‘There were definitely some challenging [moments] because my mom and I were in some of the most challenging places I felt we’ve been,’ the star revealed.

During the season premiere the ladies had what she described as ‘a knockdown drag-out [fight].’

She recalled, ‘I was like, “I wonder if anyone’s going to be able to tell.” And of course, you can’t because that’s the idea. 

‘That’s not why [people] are tuning in to watch Good Bones. That’s not what they want.’

Starsiak Hawk joined forces in forming the Indianapolis-based company Two Chicks in 2007. 

Then in 2019 Laine retreated from the company, though she continued to appear on Good Bones.

The show ended in October 2023, and later returned in August 2024 for a three-episode spinoff in which the pair focused on separate home improvement projects in different states, per People.

As Good Bones wrapped, Starsiak Hawk reflected on how working with her loved ones on reality TV strained their bond.

‘I think I knew that this was going to be hard and it was going to challenge relationships, because when you put anything under a spotlight, in a pressure cooker, there’s the opportunity to explode,’ she said on her podcast.

‘I just wish I had known how bad it could be.’

The media personality will make a TV comeback as a competitor on HGTV’s upcoming renovation face-off Rock the Block.

Starsiak Hawk will pair up with retired NFL star Vernon Davis on season seven. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
