Heartbreak as Aussie Music Legend Behind ‘What About Me’ Dies Suddenly

The Australian music industry is in mourning following the death of legendary Moving Pictures musician Ian Lees.

Lees was the bassist for the iconic Australian band for two stints from 1978 – 1987, and from 2011, until his tragic death on Sunday from a heart attack.

He was aged in his 60s and played on the band’s beloved 1982 hit single What About Me?, which was later covered by Shannon Noll in 2004 after he left Australian Idol.

His death was confirmed on social media by Moving Pictures vocalist Alex Smith.

‘Forever and ever my friend, and just quietly the world’s greatest bass player. I love you mate,’ Alex wrote.

Meanwhile, Australian country music singer Melinda Schneider expressed her sadness at Lees’ passing, as he was scheduled to go on tour with her in just two weeks’ time.

‘I am in absolute shock that we have lost one of the most beautiful humans on the planet. Ian Lees was in my band for over 25 years,’ Melinda began.

‘He was the most gorgeous, funny, talented, empathetic, wise man. We’ve laughed, cried, we’ve managed difficult situations together.

‘He always carried himself with grace and the most disarming sense of humour, which always lightened the mood. So many laughs, so many memories. I feel completely devastated by this loss.’

Lees was crucial to the success of Moving Pictures and with his help the band charted in America, with What About Me? reaching number 29 on the Billboard chart in 1983.

Shannon Noll released a cover version in 2004 as his debut single and it reached number one in Australia and the New Zealand top ten.

Lees also played on their song Never, which was featured on the soundtrack of the popular 1984 American movie Footloose.

His music was featured in the popular 2007 US movie Hot Rod, starring Isla Fisher and Andy Samberg.

Lees recorded three albums with Moving Pictures, with their 1981 debut Days of Innocence reaching number one in Australia and 101 in the US.

His industry friends took to social media to pay tribute to him.

‘Some musicians leave a mark with their sound; Ian Lees left a mark with his soul. His groove was deep, his tone unforgettable… his presence made every gig brighter,’ wrote country singer Kirsty Cox.

‘Devastated to hear of Ian Lees’ passing today. A legendary musician, a truly kind soul,’ added Australian singer Angus Gill.

‘A huge loss to the Australian music community.’

Lees is survived by his two daughters, Meny and Erin.
