Harry Potter star Evanna Lynch breaks her silence after ‘shutting out the world’ – two years after defying her co-stars and receiving backlash for defence of JK Rowling’s trans views

Harry Potter star Evanna Lynch surprised fans as she made a return to social media by launching a new blog on Friday,  two years after shunning the spotlight following her defence of J.K. Rowling’s trans views.

The actress, 33, who played Luna Lovegood in the Wizarding movie franchise, faced backlash after she become one of the film’s few stars to support the author, going against the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Taking her tentative steps back into public life, Evanna revealed she’d been busy working on a novel and was keen to reconnect with fans after ‘shutting out’ the world.

Speaking about her absence she wrote: ‘Basically, I took a long holiday from being myself. I just got sick of her… Last year I ran out of energy to keep up that persona and so 2024 brought about a big energetic shift’.

‘I said no to pretty much every invite, job, campaign, etc (albeit a few appearance jobs, girl’s gotta eat…), I stopped messaging everyone back, I dyed my hair black (I’m such a cliché, it kills me) and took a long, lovely extended break from me’.

The actress also shared details of her new boyfriend Den, who runs his own business, she penned: ‘I live in London with my partner, Den, and our animals. Den is a gardener and I’m writing at the moment.’

Evanna previously had a secret nine-year relationship with her Harry Potter co-star Robbie Jarvis, who played a young version of Harry’s dad, James Potter. They split in 2016, after which she had a brief romance with singer-songwriter AnDel in 2017.

She wrote: ‘I am finally pushing myself out of the nice little comfort zone that I’ve been in for the past couple years,’ Life offline has been so nice that I’m in danger of never coming back,’

‘And letting the remnants of my online presence drift away like cobwebs. However, in the past few months, I’ve felt the itch to get out there and be part of things outside of my own realm again, so I’ve decided to lower my boundaries and let some more of the outside world in.’

The Irish actress, who was supported through her anorexia battle by Rowling, went quiet after commenting on the controversy regarding the Harry Potter creator‘s gender beliefs, which have been routinely criticised for being anti-transgender.

Speaking to The Telegraph in February 2023, Evanna said: ‘I think it’s important that J.K. Rowling has been amplifying the voices of de-transitioners’ – those who regret changing gender and want to reverse the process.

She later admitted that she was naive not to expect an online backlash for supporting Rowling and told MailOnline in 2023: ‘It was a big wake-up call,’.

The author first waded into the trans debate in 2020 when she criticised an article’s use of the phrase ‘people who menstruate’ and then wrote a personal essay defending her opinions on sex and gender.

Following the controversial tweet, Evanna wrote an impassioned defence of the woman she refers to as a ‘mentor’, saying: ‘I won’t be helping to marginalise trans women and men further’.

‘I think it’s irresponsible to discuss such a delicate topic over Twitter through fragmented thoughts and I wish Jo wouldn’t … That said, as a friend and admirer of Jo I can’t forget what a generous and loving person she is.’

It comes just two weeks after Rowling appeared to take aim at stars Radcliffe, Watson and Grint in a social media post shared to her 14.3million followers.

The 59-year-old author penned a biting response apparently hinting to the trio in response to the question: ‘What actor/actress instantly ruins a movie for you?’

Without missing a beat, Rowling cryptically wrote: ‘Three guesses. Sorry, but that was irresistible.’

She ended her post with three laughing emojis.

Many of her followers widely interpreted her riposte as a nod to the three child stars who played the lead roles in the successful franchise.

Relations between the multi-millionaire author and the actors – who rose to prominence thanks to the Harry Potter films – have been frosty for years because of Rowling’s views on trans rights.

Last year she publicly stated that she could not ‘forgive’ Radcliffe and Watson or other celebrities who ‘cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights’.

The comments were made following the publication of the long-awaited Cass report into gender treatment in the UK, which recommended that changes should be made to the way young people are advised and puberty blockers should no longer be prescribed.

Radcliffe has openly spoken about his rift with Rowling and said in an interview last May that his beliefs don’t have to align with the author’s just because she made him a star.

The actor, 34, and fellow Harry Potter stars Emma Watson, 34, and Rupert Grint, 35, have been outspoken in their support of gender ideology – that biologically male trans women are actually women.

Yet although Radcliffe admitted ‘nothing in my life’ would likely have happened if not for Rowling.

In an interview with The Atlantic, he revealed that he had not spoken to Rowling for years, which had upset him.

He added: ‘Jo, obviously Harry Potter would not have happened without her, so nothing in my life would have probably happened the way it is without that person.

‘But that doesn’t mean that you owe the things you truly believe to someone else for your entire life.’

He added: ‘It makes me really sad, ultimately, because I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.’

Watson has also openly hinted at the furore with Rowling.

In 2022, Baftas host Rebel Wilson invited the actress onto the stage saying: ‘Here to present the next award is Emma Watson. She calls herself a feminist, but we all know she’s a witch.’

But when Watson arrived on stage, she said, ‘I’m here for all the witches!’, in a way that many interpreted as an open dig at Rowling.

MailOnline has contacted JK Rowling’s management for comment.
