The actress also spoke about her ‘favorite new topic,’ menopause, a topic that is often difficult for women to discuss. ‘I decided I’m going to stand up for me and if I stand up for me, I know I’m going to help other people,’ she explained
Earlier in the day, the Oscar winner stopped by the CBS News studios for a chat with Gayle King on CBS Mornings to promote her new film.
In Never Let Go, she plays a mother of two young sons who is convinced that a mysterious evil force has taken over the world.
Of the plot, Berry said the psychological thriller is ‘complex. It’s about generational trauma and love and fear,’ she explained.
In the story, Berry’s character is the mother of two young sons, played by Anthony B. Jenkins, 12, and Percy Daggs IV, who start to question whether their mom is okay mentally.
‘What I loved about this mother is that it’s a different version of a mother and she is a darker version of herself,’ she explained.
‘But, this is a mother dealing with her own trauma that was passed on to her, so… she’s doing the best she can, but the love is there, but the dysfunction is there at the same time.’
The actress also spoke about her ‘favorite new topic,’ menopause.
‘I found out I was in menopause in the most horrific way,’ explaining she received a misdiagnosis of herpes, when it was actually what is often referred to as ‘the change.’
Berry hopes to help destigmatize menopause. ‘We have to decide to grow old gracefully and naturally and stop trying to diminish ourselves and stay forever young,’ she said. ‘It’s just not possible’

‘That got in interested in that, if I had this little information, millions of other women don’t have [it].’ she explained.
I decided I’m going to stand up for me and if I stand up for me, I know I’m going to help other people and and it just started snowballing.
I realized that only we, women, can destigmatize this by talking about it, making it okay, talking about it with our husbands, out partners, our sons, our co-workers. We have to give them permission to talk about it also.’

‘As we age, we have to stop believing that we have to stay eternally 30. We’re turning into monsters trying to stay eternally 30. We have to realize that we’re greater than the shell that we’re walking around in,’ she declared.
‘When men age, they become wise, they become silver foxes, we just get old,’ describing the mindset among many.
‘We have to change that though, as women. We have to decide to grow old gracefully and naturally and stop trying to diminish ourselves and stay forever young,’ she said. ‘It’s just not possible.’
Never Let Go opens in theaters Friday September 20.
