Gwyneth Paltrow talks empty nest syndrome after her kids Apple, 21, and Moses, 19, left for college

Gwyneth Paltrow recently opened up about adjusting to life as an empty nester after her kids moved out.

The 53-year-old Oscar-winning actress shares daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19, with ex-husband Chris Martin, 48.

Earlier this month she chatted with Demi Moore at a Q&A for her movie Marty Supreme.

‘My kids went off to college, and I had this big vacancy in my purpose and orientation. And then this guy, Josh Safdie, called me and I was so embarrassingly out of the [loop]. I had never even seen Timothée Chalamet in a movie, which is…I swear. Now I have,’ she said, according to People.

Paltrow, who curbed her movie career to raise kids and head the lifestyle brand Goop, said her path back to acting was a ‘confluence of things.’

‘I realized I did such an insane number of films before I had my kids,’ she shared.

Paltrow recalled, ‘Some years, I was doing four movies a year, five movies a year. I think I kind of didn’t give myself permission to take my time and be strategic.

‘I was just on this train and going and going and when I had my daughter, I really wanted to stop.’

The silver screen siren added, ‘I stopped for three years completely and since then have sometimes dipped my toe. But I kind of wanted to not be in some far-flung location; I was a single mom.’

She plays a retired movie star in Marty Supreme, and during the event the blonde beauty explained why she opted for the role.

‘I felt for Kay so much and her loss and her…I don’t know, there was something so tragic about her and sort of cold,’ she described.

‘And then she makes this choice to go back. Anyway, of course, there was the meta thing of her unquitting, which I was doing,’ Paltrow noted.

Last year she and Chalamet, 29, made headlines when photos of them kissing on the Marty Supreme movie set went viral.

Recalling her friends’ reactions to the steamy smooch, she said on Good Morning America last month, ‘You should have seen my mommy group chats when the paparazzi pictures came out of us kissing in the park. All the moms were pretty stoked.’

Apple is studying at Vanderbilt University and told Interview magazine in 2025 that she is ‘a law, history and society major.’

Following the release of her fashion campaign with Self Portrait last year, she insisted her parents have taught her the value of having a strong work ethic.

She told The Daily Telegraph in October, ‘I know this is not a normal way to grow up by any means.

‘But my parents did a really good job of instilling in me that I shouldn’t be entitled to anything. I have to work.’

Meanwhile, Moses is also following in their famous father’s — who is the longtime frontman of the band Coldplay — footsteps.

He is part of a three-piece band called Dancer and attends Brown University.
