Gillian Anderson has discussed her ‘complexed relationship’ with co-star David Duchovny on the Table Manners podcast.
She claimed she learned more about her The X-Files co-star from his podcast than working with him on set.
The X-Files actress, 56, joined hosts Jessie and Lennie Ware to discuss her groundbreaking new book Want, her co-star David, 64, The Fall, Sex Education, and what she ate on The X-Files.
Gillian said: ‘We’ve always had quite a complex relationship. You know, when you work that intensely with somebody for such a long time.
‘I mean we were basically married to each other. I’ve listened to his podcast a fair number of times, and I think it’s good, it’s interesting.’
‘It’s interesting hearing a man talk so openly about emotional things. I feel like I’ve learnt more about him listening to his podcast than from working with him.’

The star also discussed her new book Want, where she collected anonymous sexual fantasies from women around the world.
Explaining her reasons for not including ages in the submission of her book, Gillian said: ‘That was an internal decision within Bloomsbury.’
‘It was because they felt that fantasy is ageless and that somehow maybe it would be more identifiable to women if they were reading and not necessarily know.’
She continued: ‘Sometimes it’s evident, and what’s really interesting is you read a fantasy and somebody talks about never having kissed anybody and then they reveal that they’re 70 years old.’
‘Fantasy is ageless.’
Describing her book, the actress added: ‘It’s a very moving book. There’s a lot of tenderness and compassion and sadness and a lot of joy.’
‘There’s a lot of provocation, there’s a lot of c**k, a lot of orgasms… there’s a few tentacles.’
Revealing that she would be interested in doing a sequel, Gillian said: ‘I’d be interested whether at the end of all this whether there’d be a different question that we would ask, or maybe it wouldn’t be about fantasies…’

‘It might steer us in another direction based on how people respond to it or how successful it is.’
Aside from her book, Gillian also discussed whether The Fall would return for a fourth series.
The actress, who stars as investigating officer Stella Gibson in the thriller series, revealed that the series didn’t quite ‘follow through’.
Explaining that they tried to film the series, Gillian said: ‘We tried for Season 4 for a while but it didn’t quite follow through.’
Aside from starring in The Fall, Gillian also played the role of sex therapist Jean Milburn in the Netflix comedy-drama Sex Education, and previously admitted she banned her children from watching the show.
However, Jennie and Lennie asked whether her sons have now watched it, to which she claimed ‘I hope not’.
She said: ‘I hope not. At the time it came out they promised me they hadn’t seen it!’
Gillian also revealed to the hosts what her diet was like while filming The X-Files, to which the star admitted that she went through a ‘macrobiotic stage’ for some time.
She explained: ‘I went through a macrobiotic stage for a while, which is impossible to make yourself.’
‘A mixture of grains, seaweed, mushrooms and fermented foods. Some people swear by it, it’s very cleansing and very good for your biome. Sometimes people who have cancer go on macrobiotic diets and say that it can heal you.’
Gillian’s book Want: Sexual Fantasies by Anonymous, was released last week.
The actress met her first husband Clyde Klotz on the X Files set and they tied the knot in Hawaii on January 1 1994 (pictured in 1995)
The pair then welcomed their daughter Piper Maru, 29, (seen) several months later. However, the couple divorced in 1997 (Gillian and Piper pictured in 2017)
In the groundbreaking book, Gillian collects and introduces the anonymous sexual fantasies of women from around the world (along with her own anonymous submission).
Each entry is full of desire, fear, intimacy, shame, satisfaction and, ultimately, liberation.
Gillian is best known for her roles as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the sci-fi series The X Files, Lily Bart in the drama movie The House of Mirth, DSI Stella Gibson in the BBC crime drama series The Fall, Jean Milburn in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education and Margaret Thatcher in the Netflix drama series The Crown.
Among other honours, she has won two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.
