Gethin Jones might be one of the most eligible bachelors in showbiz, but his celebrity status did him no favours with the ladies after he signed up to a popular dating app.

The BBC presenter, whose former partners include opera singer Katherine Jenkins, opted to join Hinge – but got more than he bargained for after setting up his profile.

Instead of the expected flurry of interest, instantly recognisable Gethin, 46, was reported for catfishing by hundreds of skeptical women who refused to believe it was really him.

Recalling the incident during an appearance on the Restless Natives podcast, he said: ‘A couple of weeks ago I was kicked off Hinge twice in eight hours for violating the Code of Conduct. Three hundred women had reported me for catfishing.

‘It was that moment when you have to write to Hinge, on a Thursday night, all alone, “Dear Hinge, it’s Gethin here, 46, I just want to get my money back because it’s not really working for me”, eating some cereal because there’s nothing in the fridge.’

‘That’s when I’m like, “What am I doing with my life.”‘

Gethin was involved in a four relationship with Katherine Jenkins from 2007, two years after their initial meeting.

The couple announced their engagement in February 2011, but ten months later confirmed they had separated.

Jenkins has since married American artist and film director Andrew Levitas, with whom she raises two children.

Speaking to MailOnline three years after the split, Gethin admitted: ‘All I want to do now is meet someone, get married, have a big family, be a good father.

‘I have never made any secret of that but the problem is finding someone. I started going to yoga classes as I thought that would be a good place to meet girls, but it is hard to chat to someone when you are balancing upside down.

‘I had thought I’d be married by now – I was engaged, so obviously I thought that’s where it was heading – but I can’t force the issue. If it’s not meant to be, it won’t happen.’

Gethin’s subsequent romantic interests have included former The Only Way Is Essex star Lucy Mecklenburgh, TV presenter Amanda Byram and German underwear model Katja Zwara.

However Lucy later clarified she had never been in a relationship with the presenter.

She told New! magazine: ‘We’re not dating. We went out a few times a while ago but it was bad timing for both of us.’

Speaking in 2023, Gethin insisted he had never voluntarily used an online app in his search for a girlfriend.

‘I’ve never done an online app, it’s such a shame’, he told the Express. ‘I’ve got the perfect photos for an online profile but I’ve never done it.

I went on [celebrity dating app] Raya for a week. What a joke that was. I don’t even know how I ended up on there.

‘I think my mate put me on it during lockdown because he said I needed to get out more.’

Helen Skelton recalls VERY awkward moment she was caught on camera angrily shouting ‘It’s a disgrace!’ after missing out on BAFTA to beloved children’s entertainer

Helen Skelton has recalled the very awkward moment she was caught on camera shouting ‘It’s a disgrace!’ after missing out on a BAFTA to CBBC’s Mr Tumble.

The former Strictly star, 41, was hosting Blue Peter back in 2012 and nominated for Polar Challenge which documented her 500mile trek for Sports Relief, only to be beaten to the Best Children’s Presenter gong by actor Justin Fletcher.

Speaking on the Cannon Hall Farm podcast Helen recalled the incident in which she had been convinced she was going to win.

‘Years ago I was up for kids presenter at the BAFTAs and I’d been nominated for a few years but hadn’t won’. This particular year my table was right at the front, right by the stage, and I’m thinking “I’m in here”‘.

‘The guy comes on to present the award and I was like Zoolander, I was out of the chair but Mr Tumble won and not me. To be fair, I did not react well and I believe I said “it’s a disgrace” as the camera panned to me’.

‘Now, I’m a big fan of Mr Tumble, and I didn’t have kids then so I did not get the amazing work that he does, and it is amazing what he does, however, at the time I probably didn’t appreciate it.’

It comes after Helen revealed her life has been made after catching her son watching the show that shot her to fame – Blue Peter

The presenter starred on the iconic BBC children’s show from 2008 to 2013 and during her time on the programme she kayaked along the Amazon river, completed the Namibian Ultra Marathon, and cycled all the way to the South Pole.

And she seems to have passed the Blue Peter bug down to her little boy Ernie, eight.

In a heartwarming snap shared to the star’s Instagram Stores last month, Helen showed off her son colouring on a large table, dressed in a dinosaur onesie with an episode of the hit show on in the background.

Over the snap, the Countryfile presenter wrote: ‘Life made…watching Blue Peter’.

Helen then shared a video to her Instagram of an episode where Anthea Turner and Gethin Jones could be seen running covered in mud.

The clip then panned to Ernie who stood transfixed by the show and the blonde beauty wrote over the video: ‘Let me tell you about this one time son…Blue Peter legacy going strong’.

The cute Instagram post comes after Helen joked that she needed a nanny for herself and not her three kids after embracing the fun side of life since hitting 40.

'I was up for kids presenter at the BAFTAs and I'd been nominated for a few years but hadn't won'. This particular year my table was right at the front and I'm thinking "I'm in here"'

The TV personality shares Ernie, Louis, six, and two-year-old daughter Elsie, with ex-husband Richie Myler who she separated from in April 2022 and shortly afterwards the rugby league ace, 35, started a new romance with Stephanie Thirkill.

The ex Strictly star told The Sun: ‘I think we’re past counting calories aren’t we? It’s not fun. You get to a point when you think life’s too short not to not have fun.’

‘I always say it’s not a kid that needs a nanny, I need a nanny – to do all the boring stuff.’

Adding: ‘Having kids is the ultimate ironman. It’s incredible, I think women need to hear that. I’ve done marathons, I’ve done ultra marathons, but labour is harder.’

In September MailOnline revealed that Richie has become a father for the second time with his new partner. The couple already share daughter Olivia, who was born in May 2023.

Richie’s new arrival comes seven months after his divorce from former Helen was finalised following their separation two years ago.

The Morning Live presenter was married to Richie for eight years before she announced on Instagram he had ‘left the family home’ just four months after the birth of their youngest child Elsie.

But seemingly taking on her own advice and having some time for herself, Helen announced earlier this week she was taking a break from Morning Live as she paid an emotional tribute to her co-stars.

The popular presenter became a permanent fixture on the show in January, alternating with Michelle Ackerley every Monday to Wednesday.

Over the past few days, Helen has been hosting the daytime programme alongside Rav Wilding while Gethin Jones stars in Cinderella.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Helen announced that this would be her last appearance on Morning Live until 2025.

She shared multiple snaps and videos from her time on the show, with the caption: ‘Lewks and lols of the last couple of weeks at work. Over and out 2024.’

The presenter also thanked Rav for a ‘great’ few days, adding: ‘To work with ladies and gents who want to do a good job and know you need to get out on time for the kids carol concert is the ultimate pay day. Crazy proud of the content my colleagues are making.’

‘We hope it helps you in any small way. Taking nothing for granted.

‘Here’s to loading up the cheese board and putting home alone on repeat.’

She signed off the post: ‘Looking forward to having you back in 2025,’ tagging both Gethin and Morning Live.

Jenny Ryan looked worlds away from The Vixen as she donned a rainbow sequined dress for the Silver Clef Awards in London.

The Chase star, 42, was among the guests  at the star-studded ceremony at The Grosvenor House Hotel for the Nordoff and Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards on Friday.

For the event, which is a prestigious annual event held by the UK’s largest music therapy charity Nordoff and Robbins, Jenny looked a far cry from her ultra-serious quizzing persona.

Jenny stepped out for the awards in an animal print and rainbow sequined wrap dress, which had a plunging neckline.

She paired the look with sheer black tights and chunky lace-up boots, with her signature copper locks down by her shoulders.

Jenny was joined on the red carpet by artist Thomas Wolski, and the pair made peace signs as they posed for pictures.

Since 1976 the Silver Clef Awards have raised nearly £13million for transformative music therapy services for children and adults across the UK.

Jenny revealed in April that she had been left feeling ‘vulnerable and anxious’ after being robbed.

She became victim to a cruel scam after a man knocked on her door and asked for access to her flat due to an apparent leak.

While he promised to be only a few minutes as he took some photos, instead the man entered Jenny’s bedroom and stole her mobile phone as well as some pieces of sentimental jewellery.

Appearing on Morning Live, Jenny opened up to hosts Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton about the ordeal.

Visibly shaken by the incident, the star admitted she feels ‘stupid’ for letting him enter her flat in the first place and has received little support from the police.

Describing how the conman entered her flat, she began: ‘It was an ordinary morning and I had a ring on the doorbell, let someone into my block of flats.

‘He knocked on the door and he told me the building manager was on his way, there’d been a leak, it was to do with the new kitchen – which we did just have a new kitchen fitted, the landlord just put that in.’

The star went on to explain how the man said he needed to take a few pictures of the apparent leak and that it would only take a few minutes.

‘Maybe I questioned it a little bit. But I thought “we have had so many people in, it’s a quick job, go on I will let him in”.

‘Unfortunately he had some bad intentions, he ended up getting into my bedroom with the door closed and when he left I’d realised he had taken my mobile phone and three pieces of jewellery that had been given to me by my parents for special occasions and are irreplaceable.’

Jenny immediately went to try and find her phone to call her landlord and ask if the man had been expected to come round – yet it was gone.

As Helen offered her support to Jenny, she asked her how she was feeling now after the incident, as Jenny admitted: ‘Immediately and still now I feel quit stupid.’

‘I feel gullible that I let this happen. I know I shouldn’t be beating myself up too much as this was a very cunning scam.’

Closing the programme, Gethin told fans ‘Our last show for three weeks, you’ll need the rest! We’ll be back on Monday the 10th of June!’

Morning Live was then replaced by Rip Off Britain in the daytime schedule and its break came after the show was pulled off air earlier this year.

Dr Ranj Singh neglected to inform BBC executives about £22,500 AstraZeneca advertisement before featuring jabs on Morning Live

BBC Morning Live’s Dr Ranj Singh has found himself caught up in a damaging row with the BBC over his financial links to pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

The TV doctor, who quit This Morning in 2022 after 10 years, was reportedly paid £22,500 by the company in 2021 for an advertising campaign.

However, Dr Ranj, 44, failed to disclose this information to BBC executives when he led a feature on the safety of the AstraZenexa vaccine on Morning Live earlier this month.

BBC bosses are said to be ‘unhappy’ he had not raised the information, revealed The Mirror.

The BBC have strict conflict of interest rules and have expressed their ‘sense of displeasure’ at Dr Ranj’s actions.

Guidelines state that ‘significant financial interests’ should be declared ‘if they are in any way connected with the area in which they work or the subject matter they cover.’

Dr Ranj spoke about the AstraZeneca vaccine on the show on May 8 and the ‘serious but rare’ complications associated with it.

While credited with saving more than 6million lives, the jab — known as Vaxzevria — has come under intense scrutiny in recent months over a rare but fatal side effect.

In February, the pharmaceutical titan admitted in documents lodged with the High Court that it ‘can, in very rare cases, cause thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS)’ (when you have a low blood platelet count).

The Mirror approached the BBC for comment earlier this week but Morning Live instead chose to address the issue first on the show on Thursday.

Presenter Gethin Jones said: ‘Ranj worked with the company on an educational children’s flu campaign along with a number of other medics, something he has spoken about and been clear about on his social media.

‘He has never been paid by AstraZeneca to talk about the Covid jab and hasn’t worked with them since. Hopefully that clears up any questions on that.’

She said: ‘The segment on the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine was balanced and covered reported risks and benefits. We became aware of Dr Ranj’s 2021 work for the manufacturer after this segment aired and have now addressed this within the show.’

MailOnline has contacted both Dr Ranj’s representatives and the BBC for comment.

In March Dr Ranj announced he was stepping down from BBC Asian Network radio as he said his goodbyes.

The star took to Instagram to praise his fans after he fronted his last show, Motivation, which saw the NHS doctor play a range of music as well as give motivational tips, health hacks and advice.

In an emotional statement, he wrote: ‘Well last night was my final @bbcasiannetwork Motivation show (for now)…

‘It has been an absolute blast and wouldn’t be possible without this incredible lady, my producer @shreniyajnik!

‘And thank YOU all for listening and getting in touch! Swipe to hear the cutest message from my nephews, and my parting advice to all our listeners.

‘You can listen to all of the episodes anytime on @bbcsounds.

‘P.s. I’m not quitting – my series of 13 shows has just come to an end as planned, but watch this space!’

In 2023, Dr Ranj claimed he believes accusing The Morning of having a ‘toxic’ culture of bullying and discrimination has negatively impacted his career.

He spoke out against the ITV daytime show in the midst of the Phillip Schofield scandal, in which the host revealed he had an affair with a much younger colleague.

ITV boss Dame Carolyn later said an external review conducted after a complaint made by Dr Ranj found ‘no evidence of bullying or discrimination’.

Dr Ranj previously said he thought ‘long and hard’ before weighing in on the scandal which engulfed ITV but decided to speak out.

‘Our focus is co-parenting our hugely loved and beautiful daughter.’

The couple tied the knot in May 2017 in Barbados, and went on to welcome three-year-old daughter Poppy.

Jill is a television producer, who has worked on Loose Women, Top Gear and Children In Need.

Rav proposed to her after only seven months of dating in 2012 while on holiday in the Caribbean.

A month before he popped the question, he gushed about their future, saying: ‘It is early days for us but I’m very happy. I would like kids in the future, yeah. We’ll just have to see what happens.’

They were forced to cancel their nuptials however, after Rav sustained an injury while training for Splash! in December 2013.

The former soldier underwent surgery after snapping the hamstring tendons in his left leg during a somersault dive for the now defunct ITV diving show.

His injuries meant he did not appear on the show, fronted by Tom Daley, and he later sued the producers, claiming his career was derailed as a result.

Rav and Jill had been due to have their wedding in the summer of 2015 but were forced to postpone, with Rav saying: ‘It breaks my heart that Jill and I had to cancel our wedding.

‘She has been so supportive during this whole ordeal and all I want to do is show my commitment to her, and even that’s been taken away. It’s on hold indefinitely at the moment until we can get back on track.’

In November 2019, he announced that they were expecting their first child together in a post on social media which read: ‘We have some exciting news!

‘Our family is expanding and baby Wilding is due to make an appearance next year! It’s been a long hard journey… but we got there in the end.’

Then in June 2020, he announced the birth of their baby girl and her sweet name, with a snap of the couple taking her home from the hospital.

He wrote: ‘She is here and she is perfect! . . Introducing Poppy Rose Wilding 02.06.20’.

Before his relationship with Jill, Rav famously dated Big Brother star Chantelle Houghton from 2010 until 2011.

The pair’s relationship broke down after they were snapped having a furious and public row in London’s Richmond Park.

They had appeared the picture of contentment as they shared a bottle of champagne lounging on the grass, before getting into a fiery argument.

The Crimewatch star was seen angrily shouting at Chantelle, leaving the reality star in floods of tears.

An on-looker told The People: ‘The two were having an almighty row. She looked absolutely shocked as he pointed at her and even grabbed her arm. He looked furious. He was shouting at her and jabbing his finger.’

Rav later confirmed they had broken up, tweeting that he had ‘drawn a line’ under the relationship and claiming it hadn’t been ‘the genuine thing’.

He wrote: ‘Wanted to clarify situation after speculation 2day. Sadly Chantelle & I are no longer in a relationship as I’ve had to draw a line under it.

‘It’s been a really difficult week and a lot has gone on, & I appreciate everyone’s kind words. The relationship wasn’t what I wanted so badly and wasn’t the genuine thing I thought it was.

‘It’s so upsetting as I genuinely & truly loved Chantelle, but the publicity side isn’t always reflective of the truth.

‘All I ask is that you don’t believe everything that’s written, and thanks again to everyone who’s been in touch means a lot x’.

The following week Chantelle broke her silence on the bust-up and split, admitting it had been the ‘toughest’ week of her life.

She told the Mirror: ‘You give six months of your life to someone – you don’t expect this treatment.

‘Everyone could see it was aggressive. I’ve had such a horrible week – it’s been the toughest of my life.

For a girl, especially, it’s been horrible. No girl wants to go through this. I find it really painful to talk about. I’m hurt – and I don’t feel good at the moment.’

She had previously revealed that the pair had clashed because Rav struggled to deal with the fact that she had been married before.

Chantelle met her ex-husband Preston, of Ordinary Boys fame, on Celebrity Big Brother and they married in August 2006, only to split up 10 months later.

Talking about her relationship with Rav at the time, she said: ‘We have little rows – Rav finds it really hard that I’ve been married before.

‘It doesn’t anger me but I don’t like someone wanting to change my past because I wouldn’t change it for anything – I don’t regret any of it.

‘I don’t think Rav wants to acknowledge it, but what went on between me and Preston is important.’

Zoe Ball embroiled in crypto scam controversy as social media users bombarded with strange ads during Radio 2 comeback amidst mother’s cancer battle

Zoe Ball has been used to promote crypto scams with social media users being ‘inundated’ with ‘weird’ adverts on Wednesday.

The presenter, 53, returned to Radio 2 this week after taking some time off to care for her mother who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

In another blow, her face is now being used to front a fake financial scheme with scammers creating fake headlines and articles.

It comes just months after Zoe was forced to warn fans of another scam that ‘has absolutely nothing to do with her’ when she was used to promote a fraudulent crypto investment website.

Social media users voice their concerns on X, questioning: ‘Anybody else’s timeline full of weird Zoe Ball “ads” or just me?’

They added: ‘Is anyone else inundated with adverts with Zoe Ball apparently giving financial advice?’: ‘Anyone else getting weird targeted ads with Zoe Ball advising them to look at their pensions?!’

‘I’ve had about 50 adverts of Zoe Ball on my feed today’: ‘My timeline has gone full Zoe Ball. What does this mean, Elon, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?’: ‘This is really weird. Why is Zoe Ball all over my timeline?’

‘Musk’s advertising is getting worse. Seen umpteen adverts with Zoe Ball’s face recommending retirement security, I’m going out on a limb here but I don’t think legit.’

Zoe returned to her Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Monday morning after taking a week off work to care for her mother who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

The presenter was back in the studio, opening her show with the words: ‘It’s me! I’ve missed you all, I’ve been looking after my dear ma but back to bother you though.’

She later gave an emotional update on her mum Julia Peckham, explaining: ‘Sadly, heartbreakingly her cancer is quite advanced but we’re making loads of lovely memories and taking care of her, she has some amazing people around her.’

Zoe also thanked hospital staff and in particular ‘a very nice pair of chaps called Vic and Tom who took us to A&E in an ambulance last week.

In January the presenter warned fans of a recent scam where fraudsters have used AI pictures of her face to con people out of thousands of pounds.

Social media users voice their concerns on X, questioning: ‘Anybody else’s timeline full of weird Zoe Ball “ads” or just me?’

The BBC Radio 2 star appeared on BBC Morning Live to urge fans that the recent scam ‘has absolutely nothing to do with her’ and is ‘very concerned’ about the amount of people who are falling into the trap.

Zoe shared that scammers are creating fake headlines and articles that she has invested money into a financial scheme which has gained a lot of money.

But in reality, the fake account is actually made to lure people into investing money in a fraudulent crypto investment website, which is then stolen by the con artists.

Speaking to hosts Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones, Zoe said: ‘Basically I’m not really on Facebook but lots of my listeners have drawn me to the attention of this story.

‘There are some kind of posts going up on these Facebooks luring people in with these headlines, something about Zoe Ball shame.

‘A lot of people are calling it Apex AI I think and it’s making out that I’ve invested some money into this financial scheme and done quite well from it.

‘And then it’s encouraging people who follow me to do the same.  I’ve had so many people getting in touch asking if it’s a real thing.

‘Many of whom have actually given their details across and then they’ve had phone calls and follow ups.

‘I am absolutely nothing to do with this, it is a complete scam and I’m really quite concerned about people being conned out of their money.’

Not only has Zoe had her profile used by scammers to con people because of her public status, Rochelle Humes and Rylan Clark are also victims.

Speaking to journalist Camilla Tominey on Wednesday installment of This Morning, Rochelle and Rylan confirmed they have also been victims of AI fraud on many occasions.

Rylan added: ‘We can see on Facebook pictures of me or Roch or Emma Willis in handcuffs with the police saying “she knew it would catch up with her” and it’s like a fake story. Like when did I get arrested?’

Gethin Jones exits BBC Morning Live to show support for Six Nations chief Craig Maxwell, given limited time to live

Gethin Jones left his spot on the BBC Morning Live sofa to join his friend Craig Maxwell who has been given just months to live.

Craig, the chief commerical officer of the Six Nations, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in July 2023 and was told he had between ten and 18 months to live.

He is now doing a 780-mile trek to raise much-needed funds for others and he is aiming to raise £1million.

Craig’s trek is 780 miles because it took him 78 days to get diagnosed and he wants to see this process dramatically improved so the disease can be spotted earlier.

530 walkers have joined the Welshman on his inspirational mission including his close friend Gethin who walked with him between Bangor and Caernarfon in North Wales.

On Morning Live, Gethin asked Craig how he was coping with the physical nature of his mission.

He said: ‘You are without a doubt one of the most positive people that we know but Craig seriously, everything you’re going through physically, how are you finding this? How hard is it?

‘I’m not one to admit it always but I have to say it’s getting harder,’ Craig replied. ‘The blisters on my feet are sore, painful and with the side effects of the tablets, I get quite a bit of fatigue so each day between 18-24 miles, it’s starting to have its effect.

‘My dream is to do as much of it as I can but the way I’m feeling at the moment I’m going to have to take some days to rest because it’s getting harder.’

Gethin then asked Craig why he was walking around Wales instead of ‘putting his feet up’ or going on holiday.

‘There’s two reasons,’ he said. ‘The first one is the experience me and my wife went through by waiting for those 78 days – we just felt compelled that we need to do something for the next family.

‘That wasn’t something which we wanted someone else to experience and there are ways in which we can help solve that problem. So that’s really driven and motivated us.’

When he was diagnosed, Craig bravely told MailOnline: ‘I was told at the start of July I have between 10 and 18 months left.

‘I am scared. I’m scared about the things I won’t be able to influence. I am getting all my affairs in order and arranging and paying for my own funeral.

‘I want everything done so my wife doesn’t have to worry about anything. All she’ll have to do is wake up and worry about herself and the kids.

‘We’re taking them to Disneyland Paris but I’ve got no desire for lots of big trips. I just want to cuddle my kids, watch movies with them on the sofa, and have adult conversations with them about life, what I’ve learned, and what’s important. I’ll tell them it’s going to be OK.

‘I want to set them up for the future even though I won’t be there. That’s my dream. My big driver is I want my kids to see there are a few important things in life.

    ‘It’s about family and friends.

‘It’s important not to be defeated. When we told my children I had terminal cancer, the first thing my daughter said was ‘Daddy, I know you’ll do everything to fight this. I’m so proud of you.’ It made me the proudest man ever.

‘I want to show our children that even in the face of adversity you can – and will – pick yourself up and make a difference.’

He and his wife Tracey have two young children – Isla, 12, and Zach who is eight.

The BBC Morning Live team have paid tribute to show regular Dave Marsh, the father of presenter and actress Kym Marsh, following his death to prostate cancer on Friday.

Dave had previously featured on the show alongside former Coronation Street star Kym in his quest to raise public awareness of the disease after being diagnosed in 2021.

Kym’s father had appeared on Morning Live during Men’s Health Week to urge men not to hesitate in getting prostate examinations as he continued to receive treatment for an advanced form of the condition, which had spread to his bones.

Remembering Dave on Monday morning, host Helen Skelton broke down as she compared spending time with Dave to ‘spending time in the sunshine.’

‘[He was] the warmest man, constantly making people laugh,’ she told co-host Gethin Jones. ‘I could recount story after story.

The show also featured a montage of Dave as he battled the disease, which affects one in eight men and kills more than 12,000 men every year.

Sharing a post on the Morning Live X account, they wrote: ‘Kym and her Dad, Dave Marsh, worked tirelessly to raise awareness of prostate cancer after Dave’s diagnosis.

‘Sadly Dave lost his fight with the disease on Friday so we want to share his story and keep his legacy alive, and encourage men with symptoms to get checked.’

Jones and Skelton also read a personal message from Kym, a presenter on the show, in which she credited viewers for their support.

‘I and my family wish to thank This Morning Live viewers for the unwavering support they showed to dad, and us since his diagnosis,’ it read.

‘He was extremely proud of the work he did with the show to raise awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of getting checked. He wanted ti try and break the taboo, and was so happy when he received letters.

Kym with dad Dave at The Sun Military Awards in February 2020, a year before his diagnosis

    WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER?

How many people does it kill?

More than 11,800 men a year – or one every 45 minutes – are killed by the disease in Britain, compared with about 11,400 women dying of breast cancer.

It means prostate cancer is behind only lung and bowel in terms of how many people it kills in Britain.

In the US, the disease kills 26,000 men each year.

Despite this, it receives less than half the research funding of breast cancer and treatments for the disease are trailing at least a decade behind.

How many men are diagnosed annually?

Every year, upwards of 52,300 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK – more than 140 every day.

    How quickly does it develop?

Prostate cancer usually develops slowly, so there may be no signs someone has it for many years, according to the NHS.

If the cancer is at an early stage and not causing symptoms, a policy of ‘watchful waiting’ or ‘active surveillance’ may be adopted.

Some patients can be cured if the disease is treated in the early stages.

But if it is diagnosed at a later stage, when it has spread, then it becomes terminal and treatment revolves around relieving symptoms.

Thousands of men are put off seeking a diagnosis because of the known side effects from treatment, including erectile dysfunction.

    Tests and treatment

Tests for prostate cancer are haphazard, with accurate tools only just beginning to emerge.

There is no national prostate screening programme as for years the tests have been too inaccurate.

Doctors struggle to distinguish between aggressive and less serious tumours, making it hard to decide on treatment.

Men over 50 are eligible for a ‘PSA’ blood test which gives doctors a rough idea of whether a patient is at risk.

But it is unreliable. Patients who get a positive result are usually given a biopsy which is also not fool-proof.

Scientists are unsure as to what causes prostate cancer, but age, obesity and a lack of exercise are known risks.

‘Dad was an incredible man who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was kind, loving, funny and very quick-witted. Even in his final days he was telling jokes and trying to keep our spirits up.

‘He was the best dad, grandad and great-grandad my family could have wished for, and we are all truly heartbroken at his passing.’

Former Coronation Street actress and Hear’Say singer Kym has spoken about her father’s prostate cancer on a number of occasions since revealing he had been diagnosed in 2021.

‘It is with immense sadness that we confirm the passing of David Marsh,’ a statement from the Marsh family said.

‘A much loved husband, dad, grandad, great grandad and friend to many, David passed away peacefully at home on Friday surrounded by his family.

‘We are truly heartbroken and ask for privacy at this incredibly difficult time.’

In 2021, Kym took a lengthy break from presenting BBC show Morning Live, later revealing she had been suffering from anxiety attacks and was seeking help for her mental health amid her father’s prostate cancer diagnosis earlier that year.

She appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2022, and when she became the 10th celebrity voted off the BBC show she spoke of wanting to make her father, who had been receiving prostate cancer treatment in hospital, happy.
