George Clooney already had beef with Quentin Tarantino for calling him ‘not a movie star’ in 2024 after they portrayed the Gecko brothers in Robert Rodriguez’s 1996 vampire flick From Dusk till Dawn.
But the 64-year-old Jay Kelly star further fueled their Hollywood feud as he accepted the trophy for best actor at the 25th AARP Movies for Grownups Awards last Saturday (ceremony airs February 22 on PBS).
In his speech, Clooney addressed the 62-year-old director’s insults on Bret Easton Ellis’ Patreon podcast on December 2 about Matthew Lillard, Owen Wilson and Paul Dano whom he called ‘a weak, uninteresting guy’ and ‘the weakest male actor in SAG.’
According to Variety, the two-time Oscar winner said onstage the Beverly Wilshire Hotel: ‘By the way, Paul Dano and Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard, I would be honored to work with those actors. Honored.’
Clooney previously co-starred with Lillard in Alexander Payne’s 2011 Hawaiian-set grief family drama The Descendants, in which he played the man his comatose wife had an affair with.
‘[My movie Jay Kelly was] made by people who love actors — that’s an important part,’ the Good Night, And Good Luck thespian explained.

‘People I’ve known most of my life… actually, most of them are actors. I have a great affinity [for them], and I don’t enjoy watching people be cruel.’
Clooney concluded: ‘We are living in a time of cruelty. We don’t need to be adding to it.’
Tarantino’s prior controversies include repeatedly dropping the N-word onscreen, his flagrant foot fetish, numerous collaborations with producer Harvey Weinstein, defending Roman Polanski, forcing Uma Thurman to film a dangerous car stunt and emasculating the legendary Bruce Lee.
The Kentucky-born silver fox was presented with the age 50+ honor by his former ER castmate Noah Wyle, who won the best actor in TV trophy thanks to his performance in HBO Max’s The Pitt.
Clooney called the script for Noah Baumbach’s critically-acclaimed dramedy, now streaming on Netflix, ‘beautiful.’
‘I couldn’t believe my luck that I got to play the part,’ the Nespresso brand ambassador gushed onstage.
Jay Kelly also featured Adam Sandler, Billy Crudup, Laura Dern, Greta Gerwig, Isla Fisher, Riley Keough, Emily Mortimer, Patrick Wilson, Stacy Keach and Jim Broadbent.
But Clooney will have to wait until January 22 to find out whether he scored an Academy Award nomination.
