Mathew Horne has revealed that his ex girlfriend tragically passed away from leukemia in 2004.
The Gavin & Stacey actor, 47, reflected on the ‘very difficult time’ in candid podcast chat this week and recalled losing the person who he was close to.
Speaking on the new episode of Gyles Brandreth’s podcast he opened up about the ‘amazing girl’.
He said: ‘She was a very very dear friend. It wasn’t like a sort of lustful passionate union like it was with the school relationship.
‘But again actually it was quite an interesting one. We were really close friends and everybody thought that we should be together, and eventually we did.
He then continued: ‘She sadly passed away… She was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2003, and then by January 2004 she was gone.

‘Very very sad. We weren’t strictly together at that time. We had gone our separate ways for about a year, but obviously the connection was still there. It was a very difficult time.’
Mathew is now married to partner Celina Bassili.
Mathew and Celina wed in a secret wedding held at a 1930s mansion in the bride’s native Norway in 2021 after they began dating in 2019.
Mat was previously engaged to Evelyn Hoskins, star of BBC medical drama Casualty.
In the podcast he spoke glowingly of Celina, saying: ‘We met seven years ago. Not long ago. I was doing a web series for a friend of mine who’s a writer and actor, and my wife Celina was on the… she works in the art department, set design, for film and tv.
‘And I was rather taken by her.’
He added: ‘It became very clear that she was the one. I met her about a year before my mother passed away. Then I lost my mum, and Celina stood by my side throughout what was a really wretched time.
‘Our relationship grew and grew, and my love for her grew and grew. I just knew from that experience that I wanted to be with her forever.

‘I joke about her being my current wife; she is my only wife and will be my only wife.
‘She helped open my mind at a time when it was closing off. She has an incredible list for life, and a curiosity and a desire to achieve things and travel.
‘And she has many many dreams. We make a joke of it: ‘Oh, it’s been my dream to do this… it’s been my dream to do that…’.
‘And she has an incredibly infectious lust for life which has kept me going in times when I feel like perhaps my life is narrowing in a really bad way.’
The pair share a three year old son and are notoriously private about their personal lives.
Mat and Celina were last seen together at Wimbledon this year where he showed off a bold new hair style.
After the beloved BBC show, where he played titular character Gavin Shipman, came to an end with the 2024 Christmas special, he looks to have been growing out his dark tresses.
On the show his character Gavin sports short hair but now he has opted for a longer and slicked back look.
For the tennis day out he looked dapper in a dark suit and white shirt, while Celina looked chic in a beige linen dress.
