1. Mary Alice’s suicide

Desperate Housewives began with the shocking suicide of seemingly picture-perfect housewife Mary Alice Young.

Soon after, her friends Susan, Gabby, Bree and Lynette discovered that just before she died, Mary Alice was sent an anonymous note reading: ‘I know what you did, it makes me sick, I’m going to tell’.

So began the season-long mystery of why Mary Alice killed herself and the shocking secrets she kept hidden from her friends.

All was revealed in the season one finale with the character serving as an off-screen narrator for the duration of the show.

2. Gabby’s affair with the gardener

One of the show’s most iconic storylines was Gabby Solis’ affair with her 17-year-old gardener John Rowland.

Feeling bored at home and dismayed by her husband Carlos’ obsession with work, Gabby began a secret romance with her teen gardener.

But their fling spiralled out of control when John’s mother mistakenly thought Susan Meyer was the housewife her son was sleeping with and attacked her backstage at a charity fashion show.

Gabby and John subsequently ended their affair but the gardener did go on to make  a few more appearances in later seasons of the show as he occasionally popped back into Gabby’s life.

3. Rex’s sex scandal

Gabby’s affair wasn’t the only one that had viewers hooked as it also emerged in season one that Bree’s husband Rex was soliciting the services of an S&M prostitute.

Bree had a seeminly perfect marriage with Rex but it soon emerged he was dissatisfied with their vanilla sex life.

The woman who he sought sexual services from was none other than Maisy Gibbons, another local housewife who Bree and the other women disliked.

Maisy’s clandestine profession didn’t stay secret for long however and she was ultimately arrested and thrown in prison.

Gabby’s husband Carlos wasn’t completely in the dark about the gardener as he did suspect she was having an affair and enlisted his mothe Juanita to help him find out.

Juanita walked in on Gabby having sex with John and took a photo of them together before fleeing the house.

As she crossed the street, she was run over by a car being driven by Bree’s teenage son Andrew.

When Bree found out what happened, she covered up Andrew’s crime and it wasn’t until years later in season seven that Carlos learned the truth.

This led to increasing tension between the two women which culminated in a violent scuffle in a church that has gone down as one of the show’s most memorable fights

The scene is remembered as one of the most emotionally-charged of the show and it wasn’t until the following season the two characters were reunited.
