Ferne McCann Faces Backlash for Labubu Trend with Dog Amid RSPCA Threats

Ferne McCann has sparked backlash from her fans after taking part in a viral TikTok trend with her pet cockapoo, after they accused her of ‘hurting’ the animal.

The former TOWIE star, 35, roped in her adorable dog, Clemmie, to play the part of a Labubu, the monster dolls that have become social media’s latest obsession.

Looking radiant in the clip filmed in her kitchen, Ferne scooped up Clemmie’s long ears and playfully held them upright on top of the bemused pooch’s head.

She mouthed along to a voiceover that said: ‘I have the one and only 24 carat gold Labubu’ before she broke into laughter and gathered up Clemmie in her arms to give the adorable dog a kiss and a cuddle.

The voiceover was of TikTok star Lilz Bullz, who made a video posing with what she claimed was a 24 karat gold Labubu in June, that went viral, racking up over 65 million views.

It has since sparked a massive trend of people recreating the clip, reusing Lilz’s sound over hilarious videos of them holding their friends, babies and pets in place of a Labubu, including celebrities like Ashley Benson, Madelaine Petsch and The Jonas Brothers.

However, Ferne’s attempt to do the trend received a decidedly less positive reaction, with the majority of comments levelling her with criticism for holding her dog’s ears too tightly, with one even threatening to call the RSPCA.

They fumed: ‘ur hurting him [sic]’; No you can’t do that fern McCann that poor dog’; ‘the dog looks so confused’.

rspca …. poor little face so confused and hold ears so tight’; ‘Ah poor Clemmie’;clearly shouldn’t be near any animals’.

It comes after Ferne was levelled with more backlash last month, after she defiantly defended making numerous Instagram posts about breastfeeding her two-year-old daughter.

The reality star appeared on This Morning, where she insisted that critics of her breastfeeding snaps are ‘oversexualising’ her, while others potentially may ‘feel triggered’ by her because they have been unsuccessful during their own journey.

She opened up to hosts Andi Peters and Emma Willis about the mum-shaming and negative comments she has received about her choice to continue breastfeeding her toddler, as well as frequently posting about it online.

Ferne – who is mum to Sunday, seven, and Finty, two, said: ‘Every time I posted, even when she was younger, it really did split hairs. It was challenging for me because I felt like I had to justify.

‘I didn’t want to offend anyone. I think that’s the thing with me, that yes I’m pro breast feeding, but that doesn’t mean I’m anti formula.

‘What is so wonderful is that women have choice. Not all new mothers can breast feed for various reasons… for me, the reason why I am passionate about it and want to have conversations like this is to continue support for that breast feeding.’

When asked what negative comments she received for the posts, Ferne said: ‘The most common one is “Here she is, getting them out again!” and it’s like “Alright, okay, we all know that you breast feed”. They are not my intentions….

‘I think the reason why people, some, people have such a problem with it is because women’s breasts are oversexualised and I think for other people, found it very triggering, felt they had failed.

‘Showing my successful breastfeeding journey wasn’t to shame everyone, every post… this isn’t to shame or make anyone feel like it failed.’

However, she went on to claim that she received far more support than criticism for her posts, saying: ‘I think with every negative comment, there has been 10 positive comments. That’s so hopeful because like I said, there is such a community. People want you to win.

‘I’ve always said midwives, they want you to have a successful journey, it’s a tight network, everyone praises it as well.

‘I feel proud to share those visuals, because I get it is shocking to people, the relationship with women’s breasts. I feel proud, especially now Finty is two because it isn’t the norm. Bottle feeding is the norm.’

When Emma asked about if she thinks that the reason she gets judged is because of Finty’s age, Ferne admitted: ‘People are not used to seeing a toddler or pre-schooler breastfeeding.

‘I think that the guidelines are to breastfeed until they are two. I never set out, I didn’t really have a goal.

‘With Sunday it was very different, it was circumstances, I had to return to work, now I work for from home, it’s just easier, it’s more freeing, more flexible for me.’

She added: ‘For me and Finty it’s very much our normal. I understand it’s not everybody else’s normal, but we’re just going with it at the moment.’

However, many viewers were left unimpressed by Ferne’s comments, accusing her of putting ‘insane pressure’ on mums who struggle with breastfeeding, while others argued that she had posted the videos in order to get a reaction.

They took to X to fume: ‘Not all mums can breastfeed, the pressure is insane and this segment’; ‘Seems to be more about the needs of the mother than of the child.’

‘There’s only one reason you film yourself doing that and its for attention. You can’t then complain when its not the right kind of attention.’

‘I think Ferne has upset lots of mums who struggled to breastfeed their babies, her choice of words wasn’t well thought through, imo’; ‘Can this segment just end?’

‘I couldn’t care less if a woman chooses to breastfeed or not, however, parents who post images online for likes (aka cash in her case) are odd. The poor kid doesn’t have a choice as those images are out there forever’.

Ferne welcomed Finty in July 2023 with her fiancé Lorri Haines, and is also mum to daughter Sunday, seven, from her relationship with ex Arthur Collins.
