The film’s synopsis reads: ‘An ode to a vanishing way of life, an ever-evolving world, and to the extraordinary possibilities that exist within even the most simple of existences.

‘Train Dreams captures a time and place that are now long gone, and the people who built a bridge to a future they could only dream of.’

With Felicity Jones stepping into Gladys’s shoes, the film was met with much praise when it premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January.

It now has an impressive 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

One critic described the film as ‘a gorgeous meditation on America, ably shouldered by one of Joel Edgerton’s very best performances.

‘Train Dreams takes on mythic proportions while maintaining an intimate emotional delicacy.’

Another added: ‘This is one of the great films of the year.

‘In time, it will become one of the best in a decade, then one of the movies that people speak of when asked what inspired them in their life.

‘It is a masterpiece.’

The film has a similarly high score on Metacritic, with a score of 82 out of 100 based on the opinions of 13 critics who received the film with ‘universal acclaim’.

The Daily Beast, meanwhile, described Train Dreams as the ‘best film of this year’s Sundance Film Festival’.

Director Clint Bentley told Deadline: ‘At its core Train Dreams is about the people who keep the world going through work that’s often not celebrated or remembered.

‘And though the story of Robert Grainier is a simple one, to me it’s a reminder of how precious life is.

‘How the little moments we often take for granted end up being the ones that give life its depth and meaning.

‘These days, as the world seems to be coming apart at the seams, that feels especially poignant.’

The film is an adaptation of Denis Johnson’s novella of the same name.

Train Dreams will be available to stream on Netflix from November 21.
