US fans were less likely to know the actor who was tasked with narrating the lengthy ceremony, but UK viewers shared their delight at hearing Matt's signature voice.

Matt, 51, is best known for starring in The IT Crowd, Toast Of London, The Mighty Boosh and Darkplace.

However, his star has risen in America thanks to his role in vampire comedy What We Do In Shadows.

During the ceremony, host Conan O'Brien introduced Matt to the star-studded audience, with the comedian taking on narrating duties from a studio in the UK.

Fans shared their delight at hearing Matt narrate the show, writing: 'I can't believe it took me as long as it did to realise Matt Berry was the Oscars announcer I'm such a fraud;

Elsewhere during the ceremony, Sean Penn was awarded Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, but opted not to attend the ceremony.

Amy Madigan took home the first award at the Oscars 2026 on Sunday night.

Paul Thomas Anderson took home Best Adapted Screenplay for One Battle After Another.

The second award of the night was groundbreaking as KPop Demon Hunters earned Best Animated Feature Film.

The Netflix film triumphed over Arco, Elio, Little Amelie or the Character of Rain, and Zootopia 2.

Meanwhile, The Girl Who Cried Pearls earned Best Animated Short Film.

Cassandra Kulukundis earned the first ever Best Casting Academy Award for her work in One Battle After Another.

Best Live-Action Short Film was decided by a rare tie as The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva were both honored.

Gullermo del Toro's Frankenstein was also a big winner as the Netflix film earned two.

The dramatic reimaging earned both Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Kate Hawley accepted the Costume Design award while Jordan Samuel, Mike Hill, and Cliona Furey took home Makeup and Hair.
