General Hospital actress Sonya Eddy’s posthumous Emmy Award trophy is at the center of a fight between her family and friend just over a year after she died aged 55 from an infection after a scheduled surgery.
The talented actress earned a Daytime Emmy last week for her work on the longest running American soap opera last week as her friend and producing partner Tyler Ford accepted the trophy on her behalf.
However her estranged family is determined to take the trophy from Ford and are upset that they did not receive it in the first place according to TMZ on Tuesday.
Sonya’s younger brother Robbie Eddy told the publication that the Television Academy didn’t even notify their family that she was going to be winning the award beforehand and her friend Ford told them he would be the one keeping the trophy.
They tell the publication that everyone in her family is now doing what the can to get the trophy including sending a letter to the Television Academy.
They also believe that it was a disrespectful move as they are still in the process of grieving her death in late 2022 and that this has made the process even harder.

Robbie told TMZ that the family has no plans to take legal action against Ford or even the Academy as they do not want to ‘tarnish her memory’ with a lawsuit but are hoping that he does ‘the right thing.’
As for what they will do if they are able to get the trophy back, Sonya’s 84-year-old mother will hold onto it as the family claim that she had sponsored her acting career.
One interesting thing that the publication notes is that Sonya was estranged from some family members at the time of her passing as she did not get along with her brother due to fighting over who was going to provide care for their mother who has both Alzheimer’s and dementia.
However Robbie told TMZ that he was in the process of repairing their relationship just before she passed away.
Back in December 2022, Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, 53, had revealed the tragic loss of Sonya, sharing a poignant snap of the actress and lauding her ‘creative angel’.
The aforementioned Ford told TMZ at the time that she had developed a serious infection following a surgery that wasn’t an emergency.
Sonya was released from the hospital on December 11 following her surgery, and began to feel ill so she went to the hospital on December 15, and doctors found she had an infection that became uncontainable, Tyler told the outlet.
On Monday, December 19, 2022 Sonya was placed on life support and she died that night.
