Extreme Makeover host Clea Shearer ‘sobbed’ after almost ‘losing my breasts twice’ to surgery

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition co-host Clea Shearer narrowly avoided undergoing implant removal surgery that would’ve meant ‘losing her breasts twice’ after previously undergoing a bilateral mastectomy in 2022 during her stage 2 mammary carcinoma battle.

The 43-year-old cancer survivor’s latest health scare happened last Friday when she ‘developed massive pain in my right breast’ causing her to cancel her Sunday flight to New York City to appear on LIVE! With Kelly and Michael alongside her Home Edit co-founder Joanna Teplin.

By Monday, Clea’s right breast had turned red with inflammation despite her doctor prescribing her ‘very strong antibiotics’ so she agreed to have an ultrasound on Tuesday.

‘He also told me to emotionally prepare for needing to go flat. I immediately burst into tears at the thought of losing my breasts twice,’ Shearer (born Driscoll) wrote on Instagram.

‘I know a lot of women choose that path, but this wasn’t what I wanted. I’ve spent a year and a half in constant surgeries to make myself feel whole again and it was too much to process.’

As soon as the Nashville-based presenter ‘started sobbing’ her mother gave her much needed advice.

‘My mom very correctly said, “You are not going backwards. It is not the same thing as when you had a double mastectomy because now you don’t have cancer,”‘ Clea recalled via Instastory.

‘And that is the most important thing of all I honestly needed to hear. It kind of stopped my shoulder-shaking sobbing because she’s right.’

Luckily, Shearer’s ultrasound ‘came back clear with no fluid detected’ on Tuesday so ‘I (hopefully) can avoid surgery this time.’

Last month, the NY Times best-selling author’s doctor swapped out her breast implants with brand new ones due to a ‘wound at my incision site that was open to my implant.’

In total, Clea has undergone eight surgeries over the past three years as well as eight weeks of AC chemo therapy, 12 weeks of Taxol chemo therapy, and two months of radiation

Shearer received a lot of support from her two children – daughter Stella Blue, 13; and son Sutton Grey, 10 – and her husband of 16 years, photographer John Shearer.

The Clea Shearer Breast Cancer Research Fund founder and Joanna originally founded The Home Edit in 2015 and they have a line of organizational products sold in over 25 countries.

In 2020, Clea and Teplin co-produced and starred in their 16-episode Netflix series Get Organized with the Home Edit where they fixed up the closets of Khloé Kardashian and Reese Witherspoon, whose production company Hello Sunshine acquired The Home Edit last spring.

The inseparable pair are now the co-hosts of the rebooted Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which currently airs Thursdays on ABC.
