David McCallum, who shot to fame in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., has sadly passed away aged 90. Here, MailOnline takes a look at his relationship with wife Katherine
Who is David McCallum’s wife Katherine?
Katherine Carpenter was born in Hollywood, California on 30 November 1944.
She worked as a model and actress, with David claiming she was ‘more talented’ than he was, Katherine then pursued a career as an interior designer.
David told Closer in 2017 that the couple are ‘two halves of a whole. We work well together, and when problems come along, we solve them,’ he told the publication.
‘The best thing about a marriage is you find out what the other person wants and make damned sure they get it.’
More recently, in 2022, he told Radio Times admitted that Katherine ‘kept the family running’ when he struggled to find acting opportunities in the early days.
‘This is the life of an actor, particularly in the early years before you get a little better known: your main concern is to make enough money to keep the family running.
‘Fortunately I married a young lady who was more talented than I was [Katherine] and so we shared the burden together and we’ve had a very successful relationship.’
How did the couple meet and when did they get married?
He and his first wife, English actress Jill Ireland, moved to Hollywood in the early Sixties when he was cast as Judas Iscariot in The Greatest Story Ever Told.
It is there, in Hollywood, where he met Katherine when they worked together on a photoshoot for The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in 1965.
Jill and David had become close friends with Charles Bronson in 1963, but what the actor didn’t realise, was that Charles was having an affair with his wife.
The pair divorced in 1967 with Jill going on to marry Charles in 1968. She passed away in 1990.
Looking back, David told The Daily Mail he was ‘the wee kid from Glasgow who’d come to Hollywood … so the whole thing was somewhat complex, but it sort of worked out.’
It ‘worked out’ for him in the sense that had he stayed with Jill, he would never have found his second wife, Katherine.
David proposed to Katherine in 1967 with the couple going on the marry that same year.
They tied-the-knot at the Lutheran Church in New York in September 1967.
Do David and Katherine have children?
David was a father of five and grand-father of eight.
The actor had three sons from his first marriage to Jill: Paul, Jason and Valentine.
Sadly a heroin overdose claimed the life of Jason in 1990, the son David had adopted with his first wife.
Valentine is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter who has toured with Jackson Browne and Sheryl Crow, as well as releasing his own solo album.
He also had a son and a daughter from his second marriage to Katherine: Peter and Sophie.
Through his children, David was a proud grandad to eight grandchildren: Julia McCallum, Luca de Sanctis, Iain de Sanctis, Stella McCallum, Gavin McCallum, George McCallum, Alessandro de Sanctis and Whit McCallum.
