Pregnant Briony Aston was treated to a Red Thread Ceremony by one of her friends ahead of the birth of her third child.
The doula and birthing expert is expecting with her Coronation Street star husband Sam, who has played Chesney Brown in the soap since 2003. The couple are already parents to Sonny, three and Daisy, who turns two next month.
Taking to Instagram on Sunday, Briony – who calls herself The Northern Doula professionally – shared a series of snaps from her day, in which she painted her ‘labour candles’, ate cake and had the ceremony – based of Navajo/Dineh tradition.
A Red Thread Ceremony is also known as a Blessingway and is based on the Navajo/Dineh ceremony for creating harmony and peace for the mother-to-be and for the soul of her unborn baby.
In the UK the mother blessing ceremony is an alternative to a baby shower, the ceremony prepares a woman for her transition into motherhood with friends and family offering support and love rather than focusing on gifts for the baby.

Briony shared sweet snaps from the day, including a shot of her cake and her kids painting. She added a caption reading: ‘Feeling so blessed. What a beautiful surprise! With Olivia Phillips and the kiddos to celebrate our beautiful babe…
‘We had a red thread ceremony (something I often do with doula clients), labour candle painting and cake (what more could a heavily preggo mama want?!)’.
In November, Sam and Briony announced their baby news. The couple couldn’t contain their excitement as they announced the gender after they found out through a blood test because they were too impatient to wait.
Sam revealed to OK! Magazine: ‘It’s a girl!’
Briony confessed: ‘I had a strong feeling that it was a boy, right from the very beginning I was so convinced. We even had a boy’s name already. So to then find out that it’s a girl, it makes me feel that maybe the twin we lost was a boy.’
Briony also revealed that she is planning another home birth after having a successful one with daughter Daisy. The couple have previously been open about having two tragic miscarriages within four months of one another.
Sam and his Briony shared that they were expecting twins but sadly lost one due to Vanishing Twin Syndrome.

In an interview last year, they shared their joy over the pregnancy and stated that it was ‘very bittersweet’. She told Ok! magazine: ‘We were excited and thankful, because we always wanted a baby that was healthy. Then we started thinking,
‘We could have had two… Will the living twin always wonder, ‘What if?’ and will they feel lonely?’ We found ourselves questioning what could have been, while feeling grateful for what we’ve got.’
Their sad loss was due to a condition called Vanishing Twin Syndrome, which occurs when one foetus stops growing and the mother’s body absorbs the embryo.
Sam and Briony were told that she was expecting non-identical twins after a midwife discovered the remaining amniotic sac during an ultrasound scan.
Briony said: ‘If we hadn’t had the early scan, I wouldn’t even have known. But it does explain why I was so sick and tired this time around compared to my other pregnancies.
