Australian actress Rose Byrne scored a major career win on Monday after taking home a Golden Globe for her role in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
And now it appears the 46-year-old’s acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy award created a stir online – but not for the right reasons.
During her chat, Rose said that her husband, Bobby Cannavale could not make the ceremony because he was at a reptile expo buying a ‘bearded dragon’.
Rose’s good-natured jest has created a storm of criticism from keyboard warriors who cannot seem to forgive the 55-year-old Boardwalk Empire actor for missing his wife’s big night.Â
‘Rose Byrne deserves a better husband,’ wrote one viewer on X.
Another person tweeted: ‘My wife was up for a career-making award, I really want a bearded dragon, so instead of going with her to support and celebrate, I drove to New Jersey for a reptile exhibition.’

‘Why would you miss this for that?’ agreed another viewer.
‘Bobby really didn’t want to go to the Golden Globes, apparently,’ said another X user.
Other people online took the opportunity to knock the award show, with one person posting: ‘Even the actress’s husband doesn’t care about the award. Many of us out here don’t care.’
Rose had already spoken up for her husband ahead of the Golden Globes, revealing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last week that Bobby’s trip was planned well in advance.
Rose explained that Bobby was committed to the reptile expo so he could buy the special pet lizard for the couple’s two boys, Rocco and Rafa.Â
The Bridesmaids star was visibly shocked by the win and admitted she hadn’t prepared a speech as she took to the stage to accept her statue at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
‘Thanks to my husband Bobby. He isn’t here because we’re getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey,’ she said.
She then thanked the producers of the movie – while joking about its relatively modest budget.

‘I didn’t prepare anything, but – I didn’t sing in this movie, guys. Thank you so much my fellow nominees, I just can’t believe I’m here,’ Rose said.
‘Thank you so much, and thank you to A24 and to our brilliant producers, to Josh Safdie, Eli Bush, Ronnie Bronstein, Sarah Murphy, Ryan – everyone at A24 – thank you so much.
‘Thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. We shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50!
‘This is like a tiny film, so this is a huge thing to be up here. And my brother’s my date! Thanks, George. Thanks to my mum and dad who bought Paramount Plus so they could watch the Golden Globes from Sydney.’
Rose beat out some strong competition for the award, including Cynthia Erivo for Wicked For Good and Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue.
The actress and Bobby Cannavale have been together since 2012 and according to Marie Claire, are not married ‘legally’ but always refer to each other in public as ‘husband and wife’.Â
They welcomed their first child, a son, Rocco, in 2016. Their second son, Rafa, was born in 2017.Â
