Evan Rachel Wood revealed that she and her Across the Universe costar Jim Sturgess were ‘actually tripping’ on hallucinogenic drugs during the I Am the Walrus scene from 2007 Beatles musical.
The Emmy-nominated actress, 36, made the reveal in a video message she sent to fans watching the musical at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in a Cinespia screening, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Raleigh, North Carolina native said she was unable to attend the Saturday screening at the Los Angeles landmark while she was ‘recovering from a knee injury and not going anywhere.’
Wood, who played Lucy in the Julie Taymor-directed motion picture, revealed to fans an Easter egg previously undisclosed about the making of the movie.
‘They told me to share a funny story or moment from when we were on set,’ Wood said. ‘Well, I’ll just say this: During the I Am the Walrus scene, any moment you see myself and Jim Sturgess, we are actually tripping.’

The outlet reported that the Westworld star confirmed she and Sturgess, 46, ‘had taken real drugs’ during filming of the scene, which was shot with a psychedelic effect.
In the scene, Lucy and Jude (played by Sturgess) were at a nightclub where U2 frontman Bono, billed as the character Dr. Robert, performed the 1967 Beatles song I Am the Walrus from their Magical Mystery Tour album.
Wood said Taymor did not know the actors had consumed said substances during filming of the scene.
‘When I told her that later on, she said, “Oh. That makes sense!”‘ Wood said.
Wood told fans at the screening that the motion picture ‘almost didn’t happen’ in the way filmmakers would bring it to audiences in October of 2007.
‘The heads of the studio wanted to change quite a bit,’ Wood said in the clip. ‘They wanted to remove anything political, anything queer and anything psychedelic.
‘So, pretty much every cool part of this film would have ended up on the cutting room floor if it wasn’t for our amazing director Julie Taymor.’
Wood said Taymor ‘stood her ground and got the entire cast to back her up and say we would remove our names from this film if they were to gut it in that way.’
