When Richard subsequently went in for an interview with Frito-Lay, he told his boss, played by Matt Walsh that he had a ‘PhD; I’m poor, hungry and determined.’
Baker went on to tell Richard that the company was undergoing a round of layoffs, and he became disheartened after delivering cool ranch-flavored Doritos to a store and seeing a bag being taken by an upper-class woman.
The former janitor then took his sons to a park and subsequently received inspiration for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos from various Mexican snacks, including elote, which one of his children said ‘burns good.’
After watching several snack vendors add chili powder and hot sauce to their wares, Richard commented: ‘I had been searching for an answer. And there it was. They had been there the entire time.’
The former janitor went on to tell both his boss and Enrico that his idea for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos was ‘going to change everything’ and ‘save our factory.’
Baker then advised Richard to market his idea specifically to the Hispanic community before a higher-up at Frito-Lay dismissively asked: ‘Why are we wasting time on this crazy janitor’s idea?’
After Judy told her husband to ‘get out there and be great,’ Richard brought several of his old friends to the pitch for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, during which he told the company’s executives that ‘we want to know that we matter to you.’
The former janitor continued: ‘If we knew that there was a product out there for us, we’d say “take all our money,”‘ after which he added that he ‘got a little hood there at the end.’
Flamin’ Hot was based on Richard’s book A Boy, a Burrito and a Cookie: From Janitor to Executive, which was published in 2013.
The former janitor went on to assume an executive role at PepsiCo and became a motivational speaker.
However, a 2021 article from the Los Angeles Times cast doubt on his story about the snack’s invention, and a spokesperson for Frito-Lay stated: ‘None of our records show that Richard was involved in any capacity in the Flamin’ Hot test market.’
The spokesperson added: ‘That doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate Richard, but the facts do not support the urban legend.’
