The Honorary Award was previously won by the likes of Benicio Del Toro, Antonio Banderas and Diego Luna – but on Sunday night it was Sofia Vergara to honour Eva in a surprising appearance.
The Griselda star told her beloved pal and fellow actress: ‘Eva, you’re the best.
‘Everything you’ve done, with your foundation, for the children you’ve helped, for the people you’ve helped — I mean, you deserve this award.’
The Desperate Housewife and Sofia share a long-time friendship as well as a crucial role in promoting Latino culture in the acting industry.
The acting pair and close pals were both appointed to the advisory board of the future National Museum of the American Latino in Washington, D.C.
Eva looked overwhelmed with joy as she picked up her award prize and warmly hugged the Modern Family favourite.
Speaking emotionally to the crowd, Eva said: ‘It’s a great honor for me to receive this recognition.
‘I love being here, especially in this country that I’ve loved so much for many years. Whenever I’m here, in Spain, I feel at home, I feel happy, I feel … I feel protected, honestly.
‘Spain has always treated me very well, me and my whole family.’
The actress continued her monologue: ‘I don’t know if you knew, I was born in Texas. I’m Mexican-American. I have Spanish blood in my veins.
