Eric Bana plays a father trying to investigate a cult… which his daughter may be on the fringes of in the new trailer for Vertical’s A Sacrifice.

The film is an adaptation of Nicholas Hogg’s 2015 novel Tokyo, with Bana playing an American social psychologist named Ben Monroe.

He is in Berlin investigating the disturbing events connected to a local cult, unaware that his daughter Mazzy (Sadie SInk) is getting close to the son of the cult’s leader.

The film was written and directed by Jordan Scott – the daughter of famed filmmaker Ridley Scott, who himself serves as a producer, with Bana – who was spotted in New York City with Deborra-Lee Furness earlier this month – executive producing.

Vertical has issued a June 28 release date, putting it up against Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 and John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place: Day One.

The trailer begins with Ben arriving at the scene of a grisly crime, asking, ‘What happened here?’

‘It wasn’t accidental. They killed themselves in shifts, and then there’s this,’ says the female coroner, adding, ‘Then there’s this,’ opening one’s mouth, revealing an object inside.

They also find a manifesto, which she reads, ‘Sacrifice is redemption,’ as Bana adds, ‘The minute someone mentions sacrifice or redemption, I smell cult.’

Ben’s daughter Mazzy is seen arriving in Berlin from the airport, making her way to Ben’s apartment, but she’s being watched by a young man (Jonas Dassler).

She asks him, ‘what chapter are you on,’ but he insists, ‘It doesn’t work like that. It’s interesting, even you’d find it interesting.’

Ben is also apparently a teacher, telling a woman named Nina (Sylvia Hoeks), ‘I’d like to break out of the theoretical side of life,’ as she adds, ‘We are desperate for your insight.’

He says that, ‘Kids are totally isolated, there’re just predators waiting for them,’ as Mazzy talks to the young man seen following her earlier.

He prophetically tells her, ‘Don’t talk to strangers,’ while later he invites her to his group, saying they, ‘need people like you.’

Mazzy and Ben get in a fight as Mazzy blames him for the family breaking up, as she leaves his apartment and flees to the embrace of the cult, saying her dad lied to her.

‘The sooner you stop relying on them the more powerful you will be. Purify and start again,’ the cult leader tells Mazzy.

The trailer winds down with a number of dramatic shots revealing Mazzy has become fully entrenched into the cult.
